Speedo LZR Racer

Speech 1301 Tues. Thurs.
November 30, 2009

The SPEEDO LZR RACER is made from a unique lightweight, water repellent, and fast-drying fabric that has been developed to reduce drag and help hold the swimmer’s body in a more streamlined shape. Following three years of research that included input from NASA, tests on more than 100 different fabrics and suit designs and body scans of more than 400 elite swimmers, Speedo has launched its most hydro-dynamically advanced - and fastest - swimsuit to date. The specially engineered, highly flexible fabric called LZR PULSE is ultrasonically welded to appear seamless. It takes about 20 minutes to put the LZR Racer swimsuit on. The material is made to be skin tight on your body making it feel like nothing is pulling you back when swimming. When putting on the suit you have to make sure not to use your fingertips or fingernails also to grip the panels not the fabric.

The bottom tip of the ball should be aligned directly under your chin. You should place your dominant hand on the laces of the ball, similar to how a quarterback grips the football. The offhand is the guide hand and is placed on the middle of the ball opposite the dominant hand. The middle finger should be aligned parallel to the seam of the ball, pressing the palm into the ball and forcing it into the power hand. You need to roll and cock the power hand, which forms a slight bend in the wrist, and turns the laces of the ball toward the ground. The placement of the dominant hand is crucial. First, place the first knuckle of the index finger across the seam of the ball. Second place the middle finger and ring knuckles between the 2nd and 3rd laces of the ball, keeping them close together. Thirdly, place the little finger across the bottom seam of the ball. Lastly, place the thumb around the ball, forming a natural "V" with the index finger and thumb. The placement of the guide hand is also crucial. First, place the middle finger down the seam of the ball. The height of the middle finger on the seam helps determine…

There are plenty of clothing options out in the market to keep you warm, but how about to keep you dry in wet conditions? Being dry is one of the key components to keeping warm so this is essential. That is were GORE-TEX comes in. GORE-TEX is an inner membrane layer in outdoor clothing containing over nine billion microscopic pores per square inch (Figure 2). These pores are each twenty thousand times smaller then a water droplet but seven hundred times larger then a water vapor molecule. The fabric is then able to keep the water drops from seeping in while allowing perspiration to escape from inside. This keeps the body at an optimal level of dryness, comfort, and temperature. GORE-TEX, since its creation has many significant current applications as well as major impacts on the outdoor sports market (W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc.). This paper will present background, technology, applications, impacts, and drawbacks of GORE-TEX.…
