Speech On The Influences Of The Media On Teens Sexual Decisions
Sexual Decisions by Media
By Brandon Nandalall

Almost everywhere you look and hear nowadays is always something sexual. Music,
Television, Commercials, and most definitely the Internet. We as teenagers are busy trying to fit ourselves in with what society wants us to be. So we buy a specific brand of clothing, rock a certain type of hairstyle, and listen to certain type of music. I hear friends talk all the time about their experiences in life. But, one conversation i’ve had with some friends of mine a while back got me thinking. One of my friends. Let's name my friends Brenda and Jessica, they were talking to each other about their relationships. Brenda told Jessica she already had sex and she asked
Jessica if she did. I kid you not her response was “Not yet but might as well, everyone around me is. This got me thinking, there are so many different factors in this situation that happened in daily life that we barely notice it because its such a normal thing to see. Like one time I was on Facebook scrolling through my news feed when a link popped up. It said “Kim Kardashian
Sex Tape” and It was also on the news. The fact that this was not surprising me to see this kind of stuff just proved how desensitized I was from seeing things like that on a normal basis. Even in commercials like an Arby's commercial I once saw on T.V. (Before they banned it) it was of
Kate Upton eating a burger in the most sensual way. Now keep in mind I was with my little cousins at the time and this came on the T.V. Our generation is seeing and hearing these sexually explicit messages from all over. Especially in music nowadays, I never liked this music but one day I heard a song and the lyrics were just appalling. Kids younger than us in elementary school singing and “twerking” to this on the bus. Kids younger than us are engaging in sexual acts some of us haven't even thought about doing. On Instagram some females are more worried about how much followers or likes they get on a picture so they pose like the famous celebrities due and show off their body in hopes of being known. Media does more to us then change our views on sexual decisions, but on our lives. We want to be cool and match the crowd so we do these things to gain acceptance from others. I hoped you enjoyed my speech and found it of use. Thank you.

However, according to the NY times, one in three of the most popular songs in recent years have contained negative references, such as promoting rash behaviors in regards to alcohol, drugs, or sex. Therefore, most young people don’t even realize that while they’re singing along to their favorite song, they’re actually reciting explicit messages. Many teens that are old enough to understand the lyrics of their favorite artists aspire to be just like them, many of whom did not acquire a proper education or lived a stable life.…

Three-quarters of a million teens between the ages of 15 and 19 become pregnant each year; eighty-two percent of those pregnancies are unplanned (“Peer Pressure Facts About Teenage Pregnancy” 1). Most teens that get pregnant do not have the education, money, or support system to raise a child, thus resulting in a poor life for the mother and the child (Wikipedia “Teenage Pregnancy” 3). Teenage pregnancy is a growing issue, especially in the United States, which is very serious because it deals with the life of another human being. More than one-third of all teenage pregnancies in the U.S. end in abortion (“Teen Abortions” 1). Although the overall teenage pregnancy rate is declining, it is higher in the United States than any other country. With teenage pregnancy being one of the most preventable issues in the U.S., millions of lives could be saved each year if we learn how to prevent the issue. Teen pregnancy has always been portrayed in the media, such as in movies and television shows but, recently, the phenomenon of teenage pregnancy has become a growing trend in the media and continues to become more and more popular. The media is exposing this issue more than ever, by having the phenomenon of teenage pregnancy as the main plot and center of movies and TV shows, as well as in magazines, and many people are questioning whether the issue is being addressed in the right way. Specifically, many people are critical of the issue portrayed in MTV’s 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom.…
