The government has tried to financially support the Aboriginals by giving them job opportunities, housing, health and legal help, this support from the government is great however Aboriginals still want the date of Australia Day changed and by the looks of this situation it seems like the government is trying to persuade the Aboriginals to forget about the past by bribing them with these ‘gifts’. The government is trying to ignore what the Aboriginals want, they don’t want to be reminded about a tragic event that led through years of torment and suffering. An example of the government discarding the beliefs of the Aboriginals, Kevin Rudd has promised a lot but he has a long list of broken promises one of them being that if was elected as PM in 2007 that he would hold an election for the date of Australia Day to be changed to a more suitable date which doesn’t remind others of tragedy, however when Rudd was elected as PM he broke the promise by quoting “To our Indigenous leaders, and those who call for a change to our national day, let me say a simple, respectful, but straightforward no.” This quote shows that there is even racism in the higher power towards Aboriginals and what they …show more content…
On Australia Day it should mean something, a day that we are all bonded and made peace, a day we finally became a nation not the invasion and massacre of 10’s of 1000’s of Aboriginals why would we be proud of that, it makes our country look like heartless people. Australia has bonded a lot more with the indigenous than they did back then we provide resources and have apologised for what pain we had caused them throughout the generations. On 13 February 2008, previous Prime Minister Kevin Rudd moved a motion of Apology to the Indigenous Australian "Stolen Generation".The apology was the new parliament's first order of business; Kevin Rudd became the first Australian Prime Minister to publicly apologize to the Stolen Generations on behalf of the Australian federal government. This is good what Kevin Rudd did however, has the government acted on delivering what the Aboriginals really want, no they still haven’t acted on changing the meaning and date of Australia Day, practically saying it will never change and you should ‘get over it’ but how would you feeling putting this behind you, being reminded every year that your race was overrun by invaders and they slaughtered your people and took all that you own and didn’t get anything back for centuries why don’t you “get over it”.
