Erik Larson uses clinical diction to describe to the reader how Holmes mechanically functions and how he perceives the world. The use of the phrase “a decision to act or remain motionless” creates an impression of a primal creature- such as an “amphibian”- on the prowl instead of a person, making the audience question Holme’s humanity. The use of the word “objects” in comparison with people gives the audience a feeling of emptiness and detachment. This feeling…
The protagonist is becoming distorted because the moral identity, Dr. Jeckyll is enjoying the “excursions…(and) plung into a kind of wonder at (his) vicarious depravity” ( The Strange 57). The protagonist has a double identitywhich fulfills the deep inner desires. However, the protagonist himself is wanting to fufill his desires and does not care about being moral, but he cares about satisfying his desires. Although this is concerning as Dr. Jeckyll is becoming Mr. Hyde. The protagonist’s double in The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde is becoming the true character. In “Coraline”, the main characters inner desires are fulfilled but there are consequences. In order for Coraline to live in the other world she must submit to the other mother and let her control her by sewing in, “two large black buttons” (“Coraline” 43). Furthermore, the black buttons mean Coraline is submitting to become a copy of someone, a doll controlled by someone other than herself. Both narratives indicate the consequences that result from indulging in inner desires.…
The doctor scoff down the strange concoction. Suddenly pangs of uneasiness and pain rush through the doctor body stringing him along. A change of deformity had occurred. I completely agree! I thought Elie Wiesel’s speech was very moving! How often do we turn our heads from the hurt and suffering? I know that I am sometime uncomfortable with watching people suffer but I often don’t do anything about it. I know that there are hungry people in different countries. However, I don’t send money to organizations that will feed the hungry. I want to be a very generous person, but we all have our limits. Especially, since I am in high school I have a hard time saving money and also giving money. Even though I can’t give a lot of money I can volunteer my time. I believe that a lot of what Elie Wiesel still rings…

John Locke, an Englishman who lived from 1632 to 1704, promoted some of the most influential ideas of the Enlightenment. He pioneered the idea that humans are naturally good, and are corrupted by society or government to becoming deviant. Locke described this idea in hisAn Essay Concerning Human Understanding as the tabula rasa, a Latin phrase meaning blank slate. The idea was not original to him, however. In fact, Locke directly took the idea from a Muslim philosopher from the 1100s, Ibn Tufail. In Ibn Tufails book,Hayy ibn Yaqdhan, he describes an identical idea about how humans act as a blank slate, absorbing experiences and information from their surroundings. The same idea manifests itself in the life of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). He stated that No child is born except on the fitra. Fitra here can be defined as the natural, pure state of a person. According to Islamic thought, all humans are born in a natural state of purity, with belief in one God, and that as they grow older, they adopt the ideas and beliefs of the people around them, particularly their parents. This is the intellectual forerunner of the tabula rasa that Locke learned from Ibn Tufail. Hb(k/LT02goUXVTUsUyTUVFUP…
John Locke was a British Philosopher born in 1632. His death was in 1704. He was a very important political figure. Modern government can be credited to his philosophy. Locke believes that religion is s key part in explaining man’s nature and driving force in life. Locke believes that we are all born a ‘blank slate’ or tabula rasa. That everyone is born equal no matter what class or religion. He thought that everyone is born pure, and without knowledge or pre-disposition to life. Locke theorized that everyone learns from their life’s experience. That it is circumstance that creates who an individual is.…
"To be, or not to be? That is the question-." One of Shakespeare's most remembered and famous quotes. This speech can be read in act 3, scene 1 of Hamlet. Hamlet recites this famous speech as he is strolling into one of the castle rooms, right before he speaks to Ophelia. Many people believe it has no significance to the play at all. This could be one reason as to why it is so famous. It could also be in part of the topic he is speaking of. Either way, the speech not only demands readers attention, but piques their interest…
The catalyst for Hamlet’s plight for revenge initiates with the appearance of his father’s ghost, providing the necessary justification for action. Its arrival offers Hamlet a medium to escape the ethical injustices occurring within his life; with his impulsive acceptance of the ghost’s existence an indictment of the severity of his moral dilemma. The sudden death of his father and incestuous remarriage of Gertrude have removed the sense of purpose and corrupted his understanding of moral integrity, whilst the commandment to seek revenge is welcomed as a means to re-establish such doctrines. Hamlet’s Senior’s murder and his mother’s carnality have produced emotional shocks whilst suggesting fundamental questions regarding the nature of human existence with which Hamlet is unable to cope. A.C. Bradley argues in Shakespearean Tragedy that Hamlet’s nature is blanketed by the melancholy ensuing from such occurrences, with this affliction inhibiting…
