Preface
This course on Special Engineering Transportation Structures is intended primarily for use as a postgraduate text conceived for students engaged in structural engineering master programs, where specific knowledge on transportation infrastructures is offered. This course can also serve as a reference for practicing transportation engineers. Since the subject of transportation is a broad one, it is expected that this course will attempt to cover the technical details of all transportation modes : air, highway, rail, pipeline and water, in an overview –type course, by emphasizing the special engineering structures specific to a single mode, such as highways, airports or railroads. Taking into consideration the relative short allocated time ( 24 hours ) for this course, we have decided to emphasize the areas of geometric and structural design highway and airport engineering, these representing the major areas within the civil engineering field that deals with transportation.
