EE 2403 SPECIAL ELECTRICAL MACHINES 2 MARKS UNIT-I - SYNCHRONOUS RELUCTANCE MOTOR 1. What is synchronous reluctance motor? A reluctance motor is a type of synchronous electric motor which induces non-permanent magnetic poles on the ferromagnetic rotor. Torque is generated through the phenomenon of magnetic reluctance. 2. Define the characteristics of synchronous reluctance motor. The synchronous reluctance motor is not self starting without the squirrel cage. During run up it behaves as an induction motor but as it approaches synchronous speed, the reluctance torque takes over and the motor locks into synchronous speed. 3. Write the applications of syrm. Used where regulated speed control is required in applications suc as metering pumps and industrial process equipment. 4. What are the classification of syrm Axially laminated,Radially laminated 5. What are the primary design consideration of syrm?  High o/p power capability,Ability of the rotor to withstand high speed,High reliability,Low cost ,High efficiency 6. Define power factor of syrm PF max=(Ld/Lq-1)/(Ld/Lq+1) Higher Ld/Lq ratos yield higher power factors, which corresponds to reduced I^2R losses and reduce volt ampere ratings of the inverter driving the machine.

7. What are the applications of the torque – speed characteristics of syrm?  Comparable power density but better efficiency than induction motor  Slightly lower power factor  Sensorless control is much easier due to motor saliency. 8. What are advantages of syrm over pm machine?  More reliable than PM machine  There need not be any excitation field as torque is zero, thus eleiminating electro magnetic spinning losses. 9. What are applications of syrm? Synthetic fiber manufacturing equipment Wrapping and folding machine Auxiliary time mechanism Synchronized conveyors Metering pumps 10. What is vernier motor? It is an unexcited reluctance type sync.motor.the peculiar feature of this motor is that a small displacement of the

The first lathe machine that was ever developed was the two-person lathe machine which was designed by the Egyptians in about 1300 BC. Primarily, there are two things that are achieved in this lathe machine set-up. The first is the turning of the wood working piece manually by a rope and the second is the cutting of shapes in the wood by the use of a sharp tool. As civilizations progressed, there have been constant modifications and improvements over the original two-person lathe machine, most importantly on the production of the rotary motion.…

    * A SYNCHRO ROTOR is composed of either a single coil of wire wound on a laminated core or a group of coils wound in slots in a laminated core. The laminated core is rigidly mounted on a shaft that is free to turn inside the stator. Two slip rings are mounted on one end of the shaft to supply excitation voltage to the rotor. There are two common types of synchro rotors - the salient-pole rotor and the drum or wound rotor.…

    Project Plan

The project is entirely on the design and development of a soft starter converter that will satisfy and implement the soft starting and soft stopping for speed control of an induction motor. Soft starters also called solid state starter are used for gentle starting and stopping of induction motors. Pumps, centrifuges, compressors, escalators, belt conveyors, mills, fans, stone crusher and saws are typical applications. If a motor is not adequately protected the sudden change in rotation torque and speed, which occurs on starting and stopping will jolt the equipment linked to it. Over the long term this can lead to increase in mechanical wear of gearboxes, clutches, transmission and conveyor systems. Abrupt starting and stopping can also damage goods being handled by the mechanical equipment. For instance, the filling and distribution of glass bottles and containers loaded on to a conveyor holds a potential for a minor disaster. One sudden jerk during starting and stopping will surely cause the entire process line to engage in a mass of broken glasses and dripping liquids or sticky product. With pumps soft starters eliminate pressure shocks in pipes and valves when the pipe pump starts or stops. This poses a particular safety hazard when the transfer of volatile and/or inflammable liquid is involved.…
