Speaking Partner Argumentative Essay
I was surprised to receive a speaking partner assignment six week into the semester. I had already started on my alternative assignment about Switzerland. My options from Pathway support were to finish my mid semester essay; then either continue with the alternative assignment or change to the speaking partner assignment.
My speaking partner was Francis who lives in Lima, Peru with his family. Through our weekly calls I learned he chose to wait on having a speaking partner until he felt more confident with speaking English. His served a mission in Argentina and with the help of other missionaries he studied English whenever possible. In the beginning, Francis struggled with pronunciations and some of the vocabulary words. But, before long

The prices of college tuition have increased yearly, and not much of an effort is put forth to try to lower the costs. For example, colleges in the state of Pennsylvania have a high tuition. Moravian College’s tuition is about $32,931, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $22,900. East Stroudsburg University’s tuition is about $6,240, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $12,500. I can barely afford Community College, and I know for a fact I wouldn’t be able to afford any of these colleges or universities either. In this essay, I will explain through facts and opinions, why the cost of college tuition should be lowered.…

As of November 20, 2014, same –sex marriage has been legalized in 35 out of 50 U.S. states. Same-sex marriage is a hot topic which the Supreme Court is considering to legalize. Many people say a homosexual person is a sinner. The question is do homosexual people choose his or her gender? They were born that way and they are happy with their lives. Homosexual people are nothing unlike heterosexual people. They are living, they are working, and they contribute to society. Proponents state that same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples and that prohibiting gay marriage is unconstitutional discrimination. On the other side, opponents argue that altering the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman will further weaken a threatened institution and that legalizing gay marriage is a slippery downhill way that may lead to polygamous and interspecies marriages (gaymarriage.procon.org). All people in the world should understand the meaning of marriage, whether a same-sex marriage or a traditional marriage. For that reason, same-sex marriage should be considered as a legal marriage because it is an equal right for humankind and beneficial for society as well as preventing youth suicide.…

Social networking sites are not good for today’s society particularly because social networking sites have very limited privacy, influence cyber bullying, and have an impact on a person’s future. Proving that social networking sites have led people to using less face-to-face communication, sites have become one of the world’s most dangerous hobbies without having to even physically interact. Social-networking sites prove more of a distraction than a useful tool. The inundation of friend requests and insignificant news feeds on sites like Facebook eat up valuable time that could be spent solidifying contacts in person. "The most effective networking is face to face," says Stanford business professor Jeffrey Pfeffer. "There's no substitute for real human contact. It's less personal online." Nothing has changed the internet more than the rise of social networking sites. Before social networking, the Internet was full of interesting information, but there was little opportunity to contribute a person’s ideas or participate in intellectual discussions.…

An assumption is a statement that understood to be true and from which a conclusion can be drawn. However, an assumption is just a hypothesis, not a fact. Mostly death penalty decisions are made based on assumptions; we use the assumptions in court and try to present that assumption as evidence. The death penalty has always been a difficult controversial topic, because it is subjective. Whether you are in favor of it or against it, there are licit arguments against each side. However, I believe that the death penalty does not help in any way in preventing homicides and crimes; it costs more than life in prison. However most costly aspect is the life of a falsely accused prisoner.…

With the creation of technology, I’m beginning to wonder if it’s a good or bad idea to be so dependent on technology. People are on their cell phones, ipads, tablets or computers constantly. People are so obsessed with their phones that they even text someone in the same room. Do people need to be entertained every hour of the day? For some, technology is very addictive. They have to run out and purchase the latest gadget as soon as it comes out. I hardly see anyone read a book these days; they listen to audio books or read books online. Before technology, people actually wrote each other and met in person. Now they talk via Skype, Facetime or text messages.…

My argument comes from the essay, “The Business World as a Hunting Ground,” written by Esther Villar. This essay describes how easy a woman’s life can be by just marrying a successful man. By doing that, they wouldn’t have to go through all the obstacles men have to go through. However, my argument says otherwise. The lives of women can be just as complicated as the lives of men.…

The opinions of society play a very large role in how we perceive ourselves, particularly in terms of physical attractiveness. Although judging someone from what they look like on the outside and not getting to know what defines them as a person is considered shallow and superficial, it is what our society has come to. Generally our first appearance is our first impression of how people view us and develop an image of who we are.…
