Speak Essay Speak is an inspirational story of a young girl struggling to manage her teenage life. Melinda, the protagonist of the book, transformed from a withdrawn girl to a outgoing one. Melinda changed dramatically from the beginning of the book to the end. Melinda started off the story as an outcast in her school of Merryweather High School. She was kneed in the back by a girl at the school pep rally and taunted by kids in the hallways. All of this happened because Melinda called the cops at a summer party. But she did this because she was raped by Andy Evans, a senior at the party, and everyone is unaware of this. Melinda rarely talks to people, and when she does, she never really opens

Heather introduced her to some new people and after they took a seat somewhere in the middle. Turns out the people behind them remembers Melinda from that party in the summer where she called the cops and ran. "My brother…

Throughout the book Speak Melinda had many topics in each of her many passages. These passages help us find out what type of a person Melinda is and what her character is all about. The entire book is narrated by Melinda. In the beginning we find out that she busted a party by calling the cops during the summer right before high school. Everyone thought she was a rat. Little do we know is that she never spoken up that at the party Andy Evans raped Melinda. During her freshman year nobody likes her and she had no friends. We do not understand anything until half way through the book which makes this book a mystery. Each of the passages reveal something and we find more and more out about Melinda as the book goes on. Some passages were more important than others. I believe that the most important passage in Speak is “Giving Thanks”. I believe that “Giving Thanks” is the most important passage in the book because we find many things out about Melinda and her family’s relationship. In the beginning of the passage Melinda says how her mother is going to work as usual and that her father was going to order pizza, for Thanksgiving. She wakes up the next morning and noticed that her mother didn’t leave yet and her mother was making a Thanksgiving meal. Unfortunately things had gone wrong and they had to get rid of the turkey. Her father tried making soup which was awful apparently. At the end of the passage Melinda was correct; they were going to order a pizza. And that was what they did. The writer tries to explain in this passage is that Melinda and her parents do not have the greatest relationship and this passage reveals a lot that her life in ways is predictable. I chose this passage because it was interesting to me that Melinda had predicted the whole day which didn’t even happen yet. She ended up having pizza on Thanksgiving which isn’t the greatest thing to eat on Thanksgiving. This passage was very ironic since Thanksgiving is about giving thanks. In ways this…

In the beginning, Melinda didn't care about school. She wasn't paying attention in her classes, she was not doing any of her homework and she even cut class: “The first hour of blowing off school is great. No one to tell me what to do, what to read and what to say” (Anderson 97). This proves that Melinda skipped school and enjoyed the freedom that she had when doing it. However Melinda gets punished for this and after a bad experience in detention, she realizes that she doesn't want to be punished anymore. So Melinda decides to follow the rules and try to do better. She starts going to all her classes and actually takes school more solemnly: “I’ve been going to most of my classes. Good girl Mellie. Roll over, Mellie. Sit, Mellie. No one has patted me on the head, though. I passed an algebra test, I passed an English test and I passed a biology test” (Anderson 143). This quote distinctly shows that she is trying and really wants to improve her grades. Even though Melinda started out bad, she improved her grades and became academically responsible. In addition to growing academically and socially, Melinda has also grown emotionally…

    Identity Theme In Speak

The quotation on page 157 captures an essential idea of identity and a theme of speaking up for justice in Speak. In Speak, Melinda is an introverted girl who did not have the courage to speak up. After she was raped at a party and called the cops, she has not told anyone the truth of what really happened. Ever since, no one, not even her best friends, have yet to talk to her. She keeps everything to herself which as a result, makes her lonely and isolated. In this quote, Melinda believes that no one can punish for for not speaking up. She says, “What do they know about me” (157). This connects back to the idea of identity. She has become a different person after the party because she does not speak up. The reality is that no one knows who…

Learning to Swim Well i never learned to swim properly during our swimming classes in primary school. I think it was because i spent too much time just goofing around in the water and i had this idea about treading water. I imagined my legs and feet should be close together when i ran them in circles so i would float around the water in a very straight and vertical position. I imagined i would look like a genie from a magic lamp. Naturally that didn't work out. I went on from primary school and for many years i believed that i couldn't swim. That was pretty hampering when my friends were swimming around on deep water at rare occasions. I feared not being able to reach be bottom with my feet. Then recently i was on a trip to Australia with some family. I practiced a lot of swimming down there and treading water and to my surprise i actually improved a lot because there was almost always a pool or a beach nearby, but i still stuck to placed where i could reach the bottom with my feet. I thought that story was over but then i went snorkling with a pair of swimming fins over a coral reef. I was worried that i wouldn't be able to keep myself above the water but it went extremely well and the coral reef was beautiful. Then i thought "what the hell, you only live once" so i signed up for a scuba dive course and we went diving on 8 metres depth for 25 minutes, woohoo! I would never have believed that i would dive in my life but i did it and i survived and i got a diploma that i will hang on my wall once i find a hammer and a nail.…
