Major Themes in the Film, Spartacus
Spartacus
Topic sentence: Throughout the film the 5 major themes change drastically, with life generally improving for Spartacus the themes all change drastically except for the nation of Rome. Brotherhood Family and Love: In the very beginning of the film when Spartacus is a miner it shows all of the slaves working with a zoomed out camera angle and depressing music, at this part of the film this theme is not evident. When Spartacus is at the gladiator training arena and the senator is drinking wine served by the slave woman with Gracchus the music is kind as Spartacus’ life is improving. Later in the movie when the senator is bathing he says to Gracchus “love and sex come with power” this shows the more corrupt sides opinion on love. When Spartacus is with his army they begin to bond and become very close, during this scene there is a man playing a lute like instrument to a happy and almost playful tune, this shows how the army is becoming so close they are like brothers. So throughout the movie while Spartacus’ life improves as does this theme, drastically going from Spartacus having no love, family or brotherhood to having an army of brothers and a love interest.
Spartacus as an epic hero: In the beginning of the movie Spartacus is very docile towards the Romans, until the rebellion of the gladiator arena he did as the Romans said and did not have any characteristics of an epic hero. In the scene where the slave girl goes to his sleeping chamber and they do nothing, when the Romans take her away the camera is looking up at Spartacus as to reflect his emotion with this close up angle. After the rebellion of the gladiator arena Spartacus began to develop as an epic hero, specifically he becomes strong and independent. When he becomes the leader he is always tentative to his men and gains their respect and admiration which is evident when him and his men are sitting around the fire telling jokes and so on. It became incredibly evident he was an epic hero
