Space In Macomb Community Study
Something so simple like sitting outside can open up a whole new world to peace and relaxation. At Macomb Community College, there is plenty of space to just sit down and think, do homework, study, or talk with friends. There is one area in particular which is a courtyard space in the middle of campus that allows students to sit down and rest. Even though it is quiet for the most part, it can also be very busy. When a person thinks of a Wednesday night, it brings no excitement and no plans. It’s a weekday that to holds no significance to most but to a Spanish speaking member of St. Anne’s Church it is a day for worship. To this member it is a night where she can go to church to pray, sing, and practice Catholicism. This member is a woman by the name of Alejandra Montoya, age 36, who is a devout Catholic and cherishes her community at St. Anne’s church. St. Anne’s Church is richly decorated inside and out, and is home to the Wednesday night Mass held at 7:00 p.m. in Spanish (St. Anne), which I choose to focus on. I focused specifically on Alejandra, to see how the community affects a specific member. By being a member of St. Anne’s Church, Alejandra is able to sing along to the melody of multiple songs during the Mass, which builds hope in her and allows her to gain strength to live her life through many obstacles.…

Lamar State College Orange is a place that I can find myself devoting time to a higher education. Whether your spending your time at the library studying, working out at the gym, or grabbing a quick bite to eat at the cafeteria there’s so many possibilities to where and why a person spend most of their time on campus! Where do I find myself spending the most time on campus when I am not in class? If someone were to ask me this question I’d be able to tell him or her right off the bat, “What better place to go to then the upstairs study corner in the library?” After all, a quiet area free from distractions is my go to place when I need to focus.…

I conducted my observation in the reading room of McCain Library, also known as the nap room by many Agnes Scott students. The reading room is a long rectangular space that is very open and has one wall covered in ceiling to floor windows. There are a few paintings and a large fireplace, with a big sofa right in front of it, at the end of the room. The majority of the couches are faced directly towards the windows, where students can people watch while studying. The rest of the room is decorated with several chairs and matching ottomans. There are a few end tables with lamps and coffee cups and students’ keys sitting on top of them. There are also two large dining room tables with four chairs around them, but no one seems to be sitting at the table.…

Just like in many schools, this class is set up with evident “centers” and work spaces. The students that require a dedicated aide have table-desks for individual instruction, while the other students are able to work at a choice of two group tables. All students meet at one large group table for group activities and lessons. Each center is clearly labeled, reading, computer, and music “centers”. Students are able to choose a favorable center on their breaks in between work tasks and also as positive reinforcement for having earned it during the day. Most students prefer to get a magazine and go back to their seats to view alone or occasionally with a staff. While a couple others listen to music on the radio or computer, and one student in particular prefers puzzles. The students have not been seen looking on at a magazine together; however two students have shown interest in listening to the same song on the radio. Most peer interaction has to be set up and guided for this group of students.…
