The homecoming musical performed this year, in the Shaw Center Auditorium, was Little Shop of Horrors. Being part of the crew, gave me the opportunity to see the play grow from rehearsing on an empty stage, to what was presented on opening night. However, I only had one opportunity to seat in the audience and see the entire play on Thursday, September 19th. Not knowing much about the play before that night, I was very surprised about everything that happened. Everyone I thought was important ended up dead, and I wasn’t expecting that. But I really liked it, because it had that surprise factor that made me jump off my seat a couple of times. Also, it was well structured, making it easy to understand what led to every situation and the characters gave live to every scene making the musical exciting and funny, which kept me interested until the end.…

Cory Crouser, who plays Romeo, is a peculiar choice for his role in the production. For one thing, Cory Crouser does not have a history as an actor. Romeo and Juliet will be his first show. Professor Shire seems adamant that she definitely made the right choice. In her words, “When I gave him (Crouser) a direction, he would work on it.” Shire went on to talk about the great work ethic of her lead and how Cory used that work ethic to become a great actor.…

What would Romeo and Juliet be like if Juliet hadn't died? What if Paris killed Romeo, instead of vice versa? What if instead of occurring several centuries ago, it took place on the streets of New York City during the 1950s, with a bunch of fresh-faced youths posing as street toughs and dancing and singing their hearts out? Well, just take a look at West Side Story, and you will have your answers. It is impossible for anyone familiar with both texts to not note the obvious major similarities between the two plays. From the opening scenes in both, up through the rumble in West Side Story/death of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, the plays mirror each other (Poelstra). It isn't until the last part of West Side Story, where Tony, our modern-day Romeo, dies and Maria, Tony's Juliet, doesn't (unlike the two star-crossed lovers of Shakespeare's work), that the major difference between the two works becomes apparent.…

In the beginning of the play Romeo appears to be somewhat pretentious. He speaks dramatically of his "love" for Rosaline which, in fact, is probably not love at all. He speaks in rhyming couplets which makes his words sound insincere and rehearsed. He over dramatises the situation while talking to Benvolio (his cousin) which suggests that he is seeking sympathy or attention - such actions make him seem immature in comparison to the rational thinking characters in the play such as Paris.…

I believe that the (1961)‘West Side Story’ film version of Romeo and Juliet is superior to the later version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ directed in 1968 by Franco Zeffirelli. Jerome Robbins, the director of ‘West Side Story’, having a different aim/ representation of Romeo and Juliet has used various effective techniques to produce his film – which I consider to be more successful. Robbins chose it to be a transformation of Romeo and Juliet & not the original play from Shakespeare, but that’s not the only reason, if it is one, to acknowledge it as superior to Zeffirelli’s film. Each director has used divergent ideas in their techniques, so different yet only to provoke from their audiences the same response. Therefore to determine which film is superior, you would have to consider those techniques. These range from visual techniques, such as theme, symbolism and colour, to auditory techniques which are just as significant as the filming techniques (types of camera shots and location of filming). Finally the most crucial factor shall be discussed – the audience response. It is the evaluation of the director’s success in achieving his purpose and the main reason why I have determined ‘West Side Story’ to be superior.…

As far as the cinematography came into being, attempts have been made to screen some of the Shakespeare’s plays. Within these screenings ‘Romeo and Juliet’ has always been a graceful and rewarding theme. Rewarding figuratively and literary, as the producers could in fact acquire a great income due to the popularity of the film. Such was the case with the ‘Romeo and Juliet’ directed by Baz Luhrmann and screened in 1996. It earned their creators 46 mln dollars in the first 12 weeks of screening and gained eight prestigious awards, among which were four BAFTA awards, and over a dozen other nominations. What was the secret of this phenomenal success and what would Shakespeare say if he had seen the production? It may be stated that he would be proud.…

On Saturday night, I attended the Dance Plus Spring show which performed by Mason Gross Art School students. The dancers were really talent and great. The shows were really amazing and wonderful. Every dance ended, the audiences gave big resection to the dancers and clapped their hands. The theater for this show is called The Victoria J Mastrobuono Theater. It is located in the Rutgers douglass campus. The theater is like brown and there are two main doors to enter the theater. This theater is a seat theater. And it is a proscenium stage. The theater always used for dance and theater. The stage in this theater is not that big, but it is really delicate. The most specific aspect for this theater is that there are some frames for the orchestra.…
