South Alabama Jaguar Marching Band Analysis
South Alabama Jaguar Marching Band is a group of individuals who gather for the majority of major events that happen at South Alabama University and across the state of
Alabama. The Marching Band provides entertainment and a lively atmosphere to any significant occurrence. The participants in the band consist of a variety of people from the campus of South
Alabama with different backgrounds and interests. Being labeled a discourse community means the marching band has, “common goals, participatory mechanisms, information exchange, community specific genres, a highly specialized terminology, and a high general level of expertise” (Swales 224). However, in order to fulfill these roles, the marching band has to go through measurable lengths of diligence. These acts that help define that they are a discourse community is called rhetorical genres. Miller quotes from Harrell and Linkugel that “rhetorical genres stem from organizing principles found in recurring situations that generate discourse characterized by a family of common factors” (Miller 153). In the band's recurring situations and performances, typically they follow standard genres in order to carry out the event. In order for the band to work properly, these genres must go smoothly. Main genres that the Marching band uses are; intercommunication, appearance of leadership positions, and

However, if a negative characteristic is noticed, generally another band member tries to respond with constructive criticism. Constructive criticism among the band is especially important on the field during practices. I am writing concerning Tripp Moore, whom I have come to know throughout my years as the Flomaton High School “Hurricane” Marching Band drumline instructor. As Tripp’s instructor, it was a pleasure to get to know him. Tripp has been a great student of mine and it has been my pleasure of being able to teach him. He has some great qualities of a human being and qualities that you would love to see in a leader. Tripp’s hard work and his dedication to music helped him as he joined band and made awesome strides to be on the best percussionist. Tripp also dedicates his time to being a part of the Flomaton High School Jazz Band, and being the drummer at his church First Baptist Church of Flomaton, Alabama. Tripp will one day be a great leader in his…

Receiving an acceptance letter from Vanderbilt University gives any student the opportunity of a college experience unlike any other. Is it the social life? Is it the Greek community? How about the Southeastern Conference sports scene? The answer to all of these questions is yes. But I failed to mention what sets Vanderbilt apart from almost any other school in the world: its location in downtown Nashville. Nashville, Tennessee isn’t called “Music City, USA” without reason. From the Grand Ole Opry to the dozens of stages on Broadway, Nashville is the epicenter of country music. Every night of the week, students have the opportunity to walk, bike, or taxi cab down to Broadway to hear some of the most talented country artists in the world. Specifically, The Don Kelley band plays on a weekly basis at Robert’s Western World and is known as one of the elite cover bands in Nashville. After attending their show earlier this year, it was apparent that their talent earned them their reputation. In this paper, I will overview the band, review their live performance, and draw connections between the band and earlier generations of music.…

On November 7, 2015 the Missouri University football team announced they were going on strike until the president of the university stepped down. Two days later on November 9, 2015 the president, Timothy M. Wolfe, and chancellor, R. Bowen Loftin, of the University of Missouri both resigned from their positions. The strike of the football team and resignation of both university leaders were a result of the same issues. These issues involved multiple racist, sexiest, and homophobic incidents that were reported to Tim Wolfe, the president of the university system since 2012, resulting in no action at all and was reported to actually intentionally avoid the problems. Although these tensions have been growing since August, just recently national…

Every performer is constantly subjected to input from the outside world. So does this negative input affect performance? I think that if a group of musicians is subjected to a sight reading test and told negative things before then they will be less likely to succeed, because the negative input will affect their mindset for success. By having a good grasp on the mental effects of input from others it will help performers be more successful.…

For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program. The concert program ran smoothly as the ensemble band transitioned gradually to each different song piece. In addition the scenery added to the peaceful presence during the show. Since the concert took place in the lobby of the music hall, people saw the bright lights coming from the ceiling and they also enjoyed to majestic surrounding of the large glass windows. The Wind Ensemble concert event was a smoothing time to reflect on…

In my next study of this community, I wish to know how many people, currently, are in the marching wind ensemble. I also plan on getting interviews of more students who aren’t a part of leadership and brass section leaders. I want to be able to observe the ensemble again and see how they communicate to each other as individual sections. I also want to be able to talk to leadership within the brass section, to get a different perspective. I wish to get more observations and plan to meet with more brass players. I plan to receive texts from each section and at different spectrums of…

When the month of August rolls around each year, football fans alike rejoice, because a new season is about to roll around. In the South, we celebrate four seasons: winter, spring, summer, and football. Whether it’s by seeing shirts or by seeing flags fly on vehicles, most people in the South know when football arrives. Unlike A Christmas Memory, where Capote believes traditions will die off after a period of time, college football has continued its trend in the south for over 100 years. Maybe it’s the stadium entrances that send shivers down the spine, the tailgating that turns into an all-day event or the rivalries that can divide family, friends and co-workers; whatever a person’s tastes are, college football in the South has it all.…

This ensemble contains a wide range of musical talents from all different backgrounds. Some members are college students, some teachers. There was also many current or retired band directors apart of the ensemble. They performed all different genres of music from a Sousa march to an Irish wake by A.J. Potter. Discourse community, a term given multiple definitions, has been most consistently defined as a group of people, who normally meet in a certain place, that have texts and practices in common. John Swales, the author of The Concept of Discourse Community, gives a list of six characteristics a group of individuals should uphold to be considered a discourse community. Even though a few of John Swales’ characteristics of a discourse community are shown in the Best Buddies organization, they are not a discourse community because they do not fully embody all of the attributes such as: a set of common public goals, use of genres to communicate, a required lexis, and have members that are a suitable degree of expertise.…
