Soup Kitchen Lessons Learned
One time when we were driving to Florida for some reason, we came across a soup kitchen. Outside of it was a sign that asked for help so we decided to hop in to volunteer. After a while of waiting to check in we were about to leave but, the person running the kitchen called us over and talked about what to do. By the time we started it already felt like a normal job. We served about half the people at the kitchen and my older brother and mom were working with cooking. Me my younger brother and my youngest brother gave the food to everyone and talked with the people a little bit. My dad took the orders and told us were to take what food. We were there for many hours because our hotel wasn’t ready for us yet and we wanted to help as much as we could. …show more content…
One of the things I learned was that anyone can have time to help even if it is not very much. Another thing I learned is that I know how to help many different kinds of people. My final thing I learned is that sometimes in life in order to help yourself, you need to help others

There were multiple different areas of the event that volunteers were working, but I personally was helping with the distribution of pancakes. I was in charge of moving pancakes from the grill to the plates. Each plate had to have three pancakes and two pieces of sausage on it. After putting the pancakes and sausage…

I've volunteered in a number of places and many events, but the one's that have left an impact on me is my time spent at The Women's safe house and Guardian Angels shop and food pantry. They both helped my family through the crisis of leaving my abusive father financially, emotionally, and physically. At the Woman safe house I couldn't help but see the kids and teenager that I was babysitting and see myself in there place and I quickly became that mentor I and help them see past the darkness and into their bright futures. I wanted to give back to the guardian angels for helping us with clothes and food so now I help run their thrift shop and work as the secretary during pantry day. All the people I serve are in the place my family and I was…

In tenth grade, I went on a missions trip with my church to Mink Lake, which is a camp by the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota. During the missions trip, we prepared a camp for the summer. Some of my personal jobs were to help clean out two sheds and reorganize them, haul logs, and trim trees all over the camp. The trip benefitted myself and the other people on the missions trip because we were able to help people have a fun experience at camp over the summer, and we also helped the people running the camp to not have to work so hard to prepare the camp for the summer campers. Another reason it was a good experience for all of us workers is because we did not have our cell phones, so we were able to form new relationships with each other since we were not constantly distracted by our…

I chose to participate in a church function at a church I do not usually attend. The church, Life Bridge Inner City Ministries, provides meals, clothing, and spiritual leadership to the homeless. Every Monday evening they have prayer and dinner for anyone who wants to attend. The past couple of weeks I have volunteered my time to help out and serve.…

The service that I did with the poor was at St. Vincent De Paul. I took the bus with a friend after school on a random Thursday with Ms. Reuter driving the bus, which I didn’t expect her to know how to do at all. It was my first time working there, because I had only worked at the distribution center the year before for confirmation. When we arrived we all signed in and they put the people who had been there before in their normal locations. My friend and I got split up, with me in charge of sorting all of the donated canned foods and my friend went over to move pallets around. While I was working with one of the staff there, I made friends with some freshmen that were also working with me. They started calling me silly names like “broth boy” because at some point I got in charge of sorting canned broths.…

I learned that everything does happen for a reason and to not sweat the small stuff because in the end, it will all work out. Another major lesson that I learned is to have confidence in everything I do. Even though I did not know how to play, I went in with an open mind and believed that I could succeed. Looking back, I accredit my success to this. Similarly, I also came to the realization that the only person I need to worry about is myself and to not let other people’s opinions affect me.…

Lastly, and maybe more importantly, I learned that it is imperative to go out and travel. I could tell how important this was because when Esiquio said traveling is important, everyone shook their head in agreement. Since I have been out of the country before, I understand where they are for coming. You understand more about the country to travel to as well as yourself. You realize things you thought were once extremely important don't matter, or maybe the things that once did not matter most now. The world is a crazy placed filled with different adventures wherever you…

I learned that if I want to go anywhere in life I need to push myself to my limits. I also learned that many successful people have a lot of grit. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and many others have grit as well as strong, powerful athletes like Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt. Many people who were once unsuccessful and were put down, pulled themselves…

We are a society who seemingly emphasizes our commitment to the equality of all. We like to think that all people are equal and are afforded the same opportunities. We like to think that outside of our own bubble everyone lives just like us. We know inherently that it is not so. There is rampant inequality throughout society. According to the text book, inequality is defined as” the unequal access to scarce good resources” (Barisco,et al, p. 231.) This inequality can lead to a portion of society not having access to basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter. This inequality leads to a large population of hungry and homeless citizens in our cities.…

One of my most meaningful service opportunities was volunteering in the Utah Special Olympics last June. I spent the morning and early afternoon managing the Track and Field events of the Summer Games with friends and leaders from my church. This experience gave me a welcome change of perspective and an opportunity to focus on something greater than myself. On this day, I had the privilege of spending time with some of the kindest people I have ever met.…
