Sookan's Painful Journey
One of Sookan's improvements she had when she was on her painful and regretful journey was she began to be more positive and think of nice things, rather than all the bad aspects of her and lives of others. This can be showed here, "It was the first time grandfather had ever thanked us". (35) Instead of focusing on her father's death, Sookan focuses on how he complemented the children.
Sookan also seems to try to be more helpful starting after mother was gone. "Aunt Tiger was bust trying to cover for Mother at the sock factory, and Inchun and I did what we could" (49) Sookan and Inchun try to help in whatever way to keep the family out of harm's way.
Sookan was more thoughtful after the Russian's attempt to brainwash everyone in North Korea.
