CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM

Uy College of Engineering College of Engineering Date Performed: Jan. 7, 2014 Date Submitted: Jan 14, 2013 Methodology Iron (II) – Silver Ions System 1 ml each of 0.10 M FeSO4 and 0.10 M AgNO3 were mixed and shaked in a 4-inch test tube. The mixture was centrifuged, and the supernate was decantated into a test tube. Separate drops of the supernate was tested for presence of Fe2+, Ag+ and Fe 3+ in three different test tubes:
Ions Test Reagent Observation
Fe2+ 0.10M K3Fe(CN)6 Prussian blue precipitate
Fe 3+ 0.10 M KSCN Blood red solution
Ag+ 1.00 M HCl White precipitate

Copper (II) – Ammonia System
1.00 M NH3 was added dropwise to a test tube filled with 1ml of 0.1 M CuSO4. Contents were mixed after each drop, and the number of drops needed to form precipitate and the additional drops needed to dissolve to precipitate were counted.
Chromate – Dichromate System Four wells of a clean spot plate was labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4. Wells 1 & 2 were filled with 5 drops of 0.10 M K2CrO4 each and wells 3 & 4 were filled with 5 drops of K2Cr2O7 each. Two drops of 2.0 M H2SO4 were added into wells 1 & 3, and two drops of 2.0 M NaOH were added into wells 2 & 4. Colors of the solution in wells 1 & 3 and wells 2 & 4 were compared.
Iron (III) Chloride – Thiocyanate System 1 ml each of 0.1 M FeCl2 and 0.1 M KSCN were added to 50 ml distilled water in a 100-ml beaker as a stock solution. 2 ml each of the solution was added to four test tubes labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4. Test tube 1 served as the control to which the other three was compared. 10 drops of 0.1 M FeCl3 was added to test tube 2, 10 drops of of 0.1 M KSCN was added to test tube 3, and 3 drops of 2.0 M NaOH was added to test tube 4. Color of the solution and precipitate (if any) of each was compared with test tube 1.
Cobalt (II) Ions System A hot water bath was prepared. 1 ml of 0.10 M CoCl2 was added to each two test tubes. Test tube 1 served as the control. To test tube 2, concentrated HCl was added dropwise until color change occurred. Test tube 2 was then immersed in the boiling hot water bath. Afterwards, test tube 2 was cooled in a water bath at ambient temperature. Lastly, test tube 2 was cooled in an ice bath. The color of the solution was noted in each step.
Waste Disposal All solutions were disposed into Inorganic Waste container. All precipitates formed were placed in the Solid Waste container.

    The first step is to calibrate the colorimeter with0.20 M Fe(NO3)3and set the absorbance at 470 nm since it is known to keep an acidic solution throughout the entirety of the experiment. It was important to do this right at the beginning of the lab since the zeroed value of the acid was the calibration number for all of the other solutions. A total of seven solutions with different dilutions were used throughout the lab to conduct the equilibrium constant. The first step was adding 5 mL of 0.200 M Fe(NO3)3to each of the 5 test tubes. The addition of these solutions formed five test tubes of different dilutions, but of equal volume, 10 mL each. After all of the previous trials had been completed the final step was to take each test tube and pour it into a different cuvette and measure the absorbance for each. Once the initial concentration was calculated of Fe3+, NCS and FeNCS2+ in molarity.
