Solar Powered Cars
Solar Powered Cars
By SolarCars on October 25, 2009
Cars that run on fossil fuels are still standard, but many would like to replace those diesel or gas engines with alternative fuels. One promising possibility is to develop solar powered cars. Although this is not yet a reality, prototypes have been built and proven to be functional and now many researchers are trying to find ways of using solar energy to power cars.
Solar powered cars would have many advantages over those that run on fossil fuels. These advantages are directly the result of the alternative source of energy. Cars that are solar powered basically run on energy collected from the sun’s rays and that means that there is an unlimited supply of the source energy. This gives solar powered vehicles an edge over those that use up the limited supplies of oil reserves.
Another advantage of solar energy is that it is also free of future costs for the supply and requires very little maintenance and upkeep. This would make solar powered cars cheap to drive. Since solar power doesn’t have any emissions, the cars would also be considered clean or “green” and not have a negative impact on the environment.
However, as of now there are no standard solar powered car models on the market. This may change in the near future, though, since many of the major manufacturers are also looking into this alternative source of energy and have ideas, such as adding solar panels to the car roof or to use solar energy as a power source to charge electric cars.

Fossil fuels are finite and will not be produce in a post apocalyptic setting. A water powered car could be logical, although, water is also a finite source and any amount found in a zombie apocalypse should be sanitized and stored for drinking. There are so many unforeseeable events during an apocalypse, but it is certain that the sun will rise every morning and that hydrogen and oxygen will be present in the air. Using a solar powered or hydrogen fuel cell car would ensure a constant mode of transportation, shelter, storage unit, and emergency weapon. I would like to explore the different uses, functions, and benefits that these two cars present in a post apocalyptic…

Undoubtedly, solar energy is an excellent choice for us, but when I think more about it’s benefits, some questions arise in my mind about it’s probable disadvantageous impacts on the automotive industry. It makes me doubt that, an unlimited energy source, so powerful and beneficial, cannot only have it’s good side. There must be a dark side of it which I want to explore and learn about through my research. Then I want to compare both it’s advantages and disadvantages over our automotive industry and find out if it is still beneficial for us to use such energy as a fuel to run cars.…

In this day and age of constant threat to our environment, there are various ways of reducing air pollution and energy consumption is being explored. Cars whose emissions are part of the factors that contribute to air pollution, are being modified to be more environment-friendly. However, these cars are expensive to produce. Majority of the population, especially here in the Philippines, cannot afford a highly energy efficient and environment friendly vehicle. Also, problems like the disposal of tons of electric car batteries will arise.…

Right now solar energy is not that efficient, only giving a range of output of ten to twenty percent, but for it to be even more efficient you would have to invest more money to make them efficient; but that of course has its pros and cons, making them more efficient makes the more expensive. The energy is already costing roughly three to six more times than current prices so making them more efficient would increase those numbers extremely high.…

BackgroundThe federal government has encouraged alternative forms of transportation due to a limited supply of oil and increasing environmental pollution. Solar cars are just one of many transportation concepts emerging. Solar cars use solar cell panels instead of gasoline as the fuel. As a result, exhaust fumes and oil consumption are eliminated. The solar cell panel generates an electrical charge that is stored in a battery and used to provide energy as the vehicle is driven. The lighter the vehicle, the less energy used and the farther the vehicle will travel. In cloudy days, or at night, energy can be drawn from reserve batteries. In the future, charge stations will be located on the road sides for quick battery charging.Materials Checklist:Before using the kit please make sure you have all the items listed below. This kit has the supplies to build at least one type of solar car model. Solar cars may be propelled using a pulley/ rubber band method or some types of interlocking gears. 1. Solar Cell 2. DC motor 3. Rear Slicks 1 9/16" diameter x 5/8" wide (1/2" wide for geared slicks) 4. Front Wheels 1 3/8" diameter 5. 1/8" dowel for axles 6. Traction Bands (for non-geared slicks) 7. Solar powered cars have been in development for years. Although they are not on the market right now, they are being used for racing competitions by universities and colleges and for research studies to determine their distance. Solar vehicles are powered by dark surface solar panels that absorb sunlight. These panels consist of solar cells (aka photovoltaic cells (PVCs)) which allows sunlight to convert to electricity. PVCs are mainly made up of a semiconductor called silicon and alloys of indium, gallium and nitrogen. When sunlight hits these panels, its energy motivates electrons within the semiconductors that creates a stream of electrons. Once that light is converted to electricity, it converts power to a battery that runs through the car’s motor.…
