Progress Report for Research Essay

The topic for my research essay is “Solar Power Cars“. My curiosity grew towards solar energy since the first time I heard about it, and over the time, my interest has developed, while coming across different and wonderful applications of such a never ending energy source. I have also been passionate about motor car designs since childhood, and my curiosity to find out about the consequences of combining solar energy with motor cars, led me to choose my topic.
Global warming is a general issue and mankind is trying it’s best to solve this worldwide problem. One of our best options is to replace our existing fuels with the endless energy from the sun. Some of the fuels that we have been using to run our cars are such natural resources which are non-renewable and also emit harmful chemicals, which cause global warming. So, replacing such energy resources with the never ending and non-polluting energy from the sun can be very useful for us. Undoubtedly, solar energy is an excellent choice for us, but when I think more about it’s benefits, some questions arise in my mind about it’s probable disadvantageous impacts on the automotive industry. It makes me doubt that, an unlimited energy source, so powerful and beneficial, cannot only have it’s good side. There must be a dark side of it which I want to explore and learn about through my research. Then I want to compare both it’s advantages and disadvantages over our automotive industry and find out if it is still beneficial for us to use such energy as a fuel to run cars.

While it may seem that electric cars are a new fad of the twenty-first century, this is not the case. Electric cars have been around since roughly the 1890s, and in fact they were the dominant motorized vehicle in the market until about 1929 [1, p. 17]. This was due mostly to high gas prices during war and the fact that back then having a range of 18 miles was more than enough to meet the needs of most people. But then as cities grew and gasoline powered cars became cheaper and easier to use, the electric car was slowly phased out, until about the 1990s. Then began the renewed interest in air quality and in the future of the electric car [1, p. 17]. In 1990 the Clean Air Act was passed, and now the gas guzzling and air fouling cars that had become so prominent began to have regulations forced down on them to improve their efficiency and to make them cleaner [2, p. 642]. This Clean Air Act coupled with the Energy Act of 1992 encouraged research into the electric car and reenergized the developments of environmentally friendly cars [1, p.17]. All of that research and dedication finally cumulated in the release of the Toyota Prius on the American market in 2000, and from that moment, it has become a cultural icon, and a topic for hot debate [3]. It is imperative new alternative fuel sources emerge immediately to avoid the inevitable. There has been consistent research and development to help diminish our dependency on foreign oil. Some of the ideas presented are new while some are out of the past such as: steam, air, electric, robotic, hydrogen, solar, flying cars, under water cars, and computer cars. Once auto makers get on board in full stride and emerge, competition erupts between automakers, and we finally see the results of their efforts.
