Socrates Vs. Jesus
In my recent interview with my fellow education major Daniela Guzman, we discussed many different topics including the factors that lead us to deciding to go into the teaching profession. The questions we came up with ranged from teachers that had an influence on us to how we would like to decorate our classrooms. Daniela and I each wish to teach a different grade so the answers each of us gave were the same in many ways but also had their own personal touch.
Daniela has always been good with children, as I collected from the interview; she said that she could always see herself teaching even when she was younger. She has taught in her churches Sunday school and has grown up with many younger cousins which have prepared her to be surrounded by children in her everyday life. Daniela wishes to teach second or third grade but preferably third because at this age kids are usually old enough to hold conversations and are actually learning as opposed to having to be babysat for the day. Most people decide to become educators because of a positive impact a teacher has had on their life, but it is just the opposite in Daniela’s case. While in the third grade, Daniela struggled with Math and when she would ask for further explanation her teacher would begin to get mad at her for asking questions. This scarred Daniela and she wants to become a third grade teacher so that she will be able to replace teachers like the one that she had to deal with.
For fun Daniela and I decided to add an extra question to our interview. We discussed the decorations and discipline style we would have in our classroom. Daniela specified that the age she wants to teach is too old to have a theme as in a safari or something that would make them feel like they were being babied. She had the clever idea to decorate for each season and holiday. As for discipline we each agreed that a visual disciplinary action was needed to make the kids strive to behave. For Example, having to move a pin to a different color for each misbehavior, or a mark in a folder. With the discipline a prize would be given for children that did not receive a bad mark or misbehave each week, making the children want to be good.
I enjoyed getting to talk to Daniela about her ideas and plans for the future. It was interesting to compare ideas with someone else in the same position as myself.
