Sociology 101 Assignment
Today I had an assignment for my sociology 101 class. The assignment was to observe the environment around us. The main goal is to see the actions or interactions of people around us. During my observation, I saw a pattern. I was scrupulous on picking the location of to people watch, but ultimately decided the memorial union was the best place, due to the fact that there are typically abundant amounts of students there. After about five minutes of sitting at PeiWei, the pattern became evident. Everyone that got food from PeiWei regardless whether or not they were with or with out their friends were all on their cell phone. Each person were performing a variety of tasks on their phones, whether it was playing a mobile app, texting a friend

The 18-year-old boys that enroll in the U.S. Marine Corps all come from different backgrounds, different beliefs, and enlist for different reasons. When they first arrive it is a frenzy of testosterone, but the drill instructors know exactly how to tame and conform the recruits before they even have a moment to themselves. They use the strategy of stripping down the recruits inside and out in order to rebuild…

Think Sociology, the textbook, defines Sociology as: the science guided by the basic understanding that “the social matters: our lives are affected not only by our individual characteristics, but by our place in the social world”. When using the sociological imagination it is imperative to be unbiased while assessing a situation, using great caution not to single out an individual, but examining all factors that may influence failure or success rates of a group or individual. It would seem as though keeping an open mind would be difficult, in which people shape opinions based on their experiences throughout life. However, while using the sociological imagination it enables a sense of freedom that allows room to be the “outsider looking in”.…

The Functionalist school of thought perceives society as an organism with each part working together to achieve social solidarity and stability. Emile Durkheim argues that education provides a link between the individual and the society. As an agent of socialization, school provides an avenue for individuals to interact in a public environment. It enables individuals to meet new friends, learn the norms of the Jamaican society, as well as learn and practice good moral values. Though the school is responsible for teaching formal cognitive skills, we are exposed to the history of Jamaica and the cultural practices which distinctly differentiate who we are. In addition, the school environment also helps to promote certain values such as honesty, competition, respect and individualism.…

(Beckford 1972) Yes, it can be said that contemporary Caribbean societies are still plantation societies.…
