Society In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
Society shapes us in many different ways. I truly believe society tries to program us to feel, look and act certain ways at certain ages. I also think society plays a huge roll in who we are and the choices we make, whether it is good or bad. It takes a strong individual to go against the majority. Society shapes us in a tremendous amount of ways such as, our ability level. Some individuals can’t do certain tasks physically and mentally. Some individuals can’t understand as quick as everyone else can and others don’t know what’s right from wrong. Events that have happened in our lives can shape who we are and how society looks at us. In “Of Mice and Men” there is a grown man named Lennie who has the mind of a child, but no one knows that except George and people think he’s dumb. Lennie’s ability level mentally is lower than average and that is what we would call mentally challenged in today’s time, but back then society didn’t know there was such a thing as a mentally …show more content…
In “The Crucible” you couldn’t dance, you could only sing hymns, you had to rest on Sunday’s, and you could only read the bible. Those who didn’t abide by those few rules would have severe punishment. If you weren’t a Puritan and if you didn’t follow the commandments you were shamed or hanged. Society during this time shaped you into a mold they sculpted. Every generation would follow the last generation and if you didn’t, you weren’t accepted in society. In “The Scarlett Letter” religion was a big deal also. You would receive strict punishment if you committed a crime and sinned. If a sin was committed then you would be shaped as a sinner by society and any association with you would be banned. Self image is very important and your reputation lasts forever, good or bad. All citizens took sides when an individual was called out for being a sinner, society and the church shaped every individual in the book “The Scarlett

“Truth is everybody is going to hurt you: you just gotta find the ones worth suffering for” (Bob Marley). The novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, was set in the Great depression. In the novel George has to deal with Lenny every single day and it’s not easy, but he loves him and he just has to accept that Lenny is part of his life. In this book, society was frustrating. People were very sexist, and instead of coming together and helping each other everyone kept to themselves this is also known as isolation. Also, during this time people who suffered from mental and physical disabilities were often isolated and faced discrimination. Steinbeck identifies many societal problems during the Great Depression, and brings them to light in his novella Of Mice and Men.…

Capturing the curiosity being produced by the reader, George grasps most of the attention starting as soon as his name is mentioned for the first time in the novel. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck, the author of the novel, vividly shows the development in George’s character. Both George’s compassion for the world and people around him and the way in which he controls himself change rapidly as he progresses over the three days in which the novel takes place. From dealing with Lennie’s disability to simply hold himself together on the ranch, George demonstrates how people can change and mature quickly. By tracing George’s journey throughout the novel, readers can better appreciate George as a character and Steinbeck’s overall message.…

In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck one of the main themes is stereotyping. A stereotype is when people are grouped as being the same. There has always been stereotyping, and while some people break stereotypes or do not believe in them, there is still a number of people who do. Being stereotyped can make people want to act like what they are stereotyped as. Being stereotyped can slowly change how you act and who you are. Trying to break stereotypes, Lennie and George, Slim, Crooks, and Curley’s wife go against the norm for people like them in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.…

Flawless skin, small waists, the unattainable idea of perfection. The idea that a woman should be the icon of feminine beauty, a brainless robot that’s great at housework and pleasing their husband. has lasted through generations upon generations, and even continued in the 1930s, when The Great Depression was reeking havoc on everyone’s lives. Instead of letting equally smart women work along side of men to bring the stocks up, they were still told to stay home and be the mothers and wives that they should. This idea continued into Steinbeck’s famous book, Of Mice and Men. Throughout the novel, Steinbeck subtly reiterates his belief that white men are superior to every other race and gender. In my opinion, the misogynistic portrayal of Curley’s…

Society is well known for judging others and setting high expectations for everyone but what people fail to realize is that we ourselves make up society. People are the ones that make up the society that calls out ignorance but fail to correct it. Both Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" and the Wachowski's The Matrix illustrate that ignorance is blissful for those that have not yet gained the knowledge to obtain enlightenment but as soon as one faces reality then they can better themselves in order to free society of their ignorance.…

When describing the effects of socialization: the process through which people learn the rules and practices needed to participate successfully in their culture and society, Peter Berger said, “ Not only do people live in society, but society lives in people." We make up a society. The laws we set in place labeling right and wrong, and the authoritative persons we put in charge teach us obedience. Society lives in us: We learn at an early age to be obedient from going to school. Our teachers taught us that if we don’t follow the rules we get punished. When we grow older and start traveling; exploring the world we see many different society’s and cultures, but we do not lose our past teachings. We evolve with the society and culture around us. We reflect what we have been taught throughout our lives from when we are young to when we are just moving out of our parent’s home all the way till we are old and wrinkly.…
