In Socialism Lies the Future
We have been placed on the Earth in troubled times. We live in a complex world with currents of conflict to be found everywhere. Political machinations ruin the stability of nations. The message I bring to you is not a happy one, but it is the truth, and time is always on the side of truth. I believe that one of the most pressing duties of our time, for us as a community and for us as individuals, is to strengthen our conscience; to clarify further, each day, our vision and understanding through discussion, debate and sharing of ideas. This is fundamental. We are living in crucial times; there is no time to waste. No time to waste. We must do something about it now, before it is too late. And the solution is to hand. Ladies and gentlemen, I put it to you today that in socialism lies the future.
Have you noticed that Scandinavian countries, such as Denmark, Finland and Norway, are always highly-regarded in measures of success such as the Forbes 2013 Prosperity Index. Let's take the example of Norway. The Norwegian tax system is more “progressive” than capitalist systems such as in the USA. Poor people pay much less. Wealthy people (and corporations) pay much more — with fewer tax loop-holes and government subsidies. And what do Norwegians get for their higher taxes? Extensive cradle-to-grave social services: health care, education, child day care, libraries, recreation and arts facilities — plus an extensive public transportation system. These are free or are offered at low cost, subsidized by taxes. For eight years Norway has had the United Nations’ #1 ranking in “Quality of Life,” which is based on a number of factors such as income, life expectancy and college graduation rates. As a result of lower taxes and higher levels of social services, there are far fewer truly “poor” people in Norway than anywhere else in the world.
But for Socialism to work, the population of a country needs to be educated about it. Socialism only works
