1) Zhang Jie is a mature and responsible Primary Six student who will be taking his Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) this year. His school made a referral and would like me to see Zhang Jie. I am a social worker in a community-based agency providing school-based social work. Zhang Jie’s teachers observed that for the past three months, Zhang Jie’s enthusiasm and concentration in class has declined. His grades too were affected.
Zhang Jie expressed that he was feeling stress. He is stress with his studies as he is taking his PSLE this year; which is a major milestone examination. He feels the pressure to do well and not to disappoint his parents. If he does not do well, he has no idea how to face his parents as they worked hard to

But social worker has to provide relevant information that allows client to make the decision. If the client is unable to make any judgment or decision and the life of the client or others is threatened, social worker can limit the rights of self-determination. For Zhang Jie’s case, I can limit his rights of self-determination as he has the intention of harming himself.
Principle 4: Least harm, as a social worker I have to choose the course of action that will have the least harm to my client. Harm should be avoided where possible. As for Zhang Jie, I have to find solutions to avoid harm because he has thought on suicidal and I have to find solutions to this matter.
Principle 5: Quality of life, the goal of social work is to enhance the lives of human beings in the society. I will make the decision to inform his parents because he has thoughts on suicidal and explain to them why he has those thoughts. Stress of academic studies, pressure of doing well and family finances leads him to have the thoughts.
