Social Skill Programs: Evidence-Based Strategies
The social skill programs provided have been recognized by the National Association of School Psychologists. The programs have been recognized for being evidence-based strategies. The first program is Skillstream. It meets students’ needs at three instructional/ developmental levels. The first level is early childhood and provides instruction for 40 prosocial skills in six categories. The six categories are beginning social skill, school-related skills, and friendship making skills, dealing with feelings, alternatives to aggression and dealing with stress (Shepard & Linn, 2015, p.295). The second level is Elementary school and provides instruction of teaching 60 prosocial skills in five skill areas. The five areas are classroom survival skills, …show more content…
It is for developmental levels of prekindergarten through eighth grade. It has five sequential steps. The five steps are think about a situation, decide to choose an appropriate plan of action, develop a plan of action to address the situation, implement the plan, and self-reinforce the appropriate behavior (Shepar & Linn, 2015, p. 297).
A social skills strategy that can be implemented is replacement behavior training. It is where competing problem behaviors are replaced with prosocial behaviors that serves a function that is the same (Shepard & Linn, 2015, p. 297).
Another strategy is Social stories. Social stories are short scenarios written for students to teach them appropriate behaviors in specific situations (Shepard & Linn, 2015, p.298). The following format is usually presented by is first the main character is introduced, second the problem is identified, third the skill steps are outlined, and fourth the problem is solved through the skill (Shepard & Linn 2015, p.299).
Video therapy is a strategy that can be used. In video therapy, movies and TV episodes allow students to identify similarities between the characters and themselves. Students are able to discuss their own behaviors and situations in way that is in a safe distance (Shepard & Linn, 2015, p.

    The intervention consisted of the social skills training and facilitated play. The participants met for 1 hour sessions twice a week over a 7-week period. The format of the intervention groups consisted of a brief warm-up session of unstructured free play; self-presentation speeches; circle time; and leader-facilitated free play. The self-presentation speech session was intended to give the participants an opportunity to speak freely in a safe environment about a topic they were familiar with. The circle time sessions were used to provide didactic content. The group leader focused on a particular set of appropriate social skills each week, including initiating and maintaining peer interactions, understanding/expressing feelings and the regulation of negative affect, with a specific focus on fear/anxiety. Materials used for self-presentation included puppets, picture books, songs, and games which were all age-appropriate ways of conveying the content and practicing social and emotional skills. The leader-facilitated free play was designed to mirror free-play sessions at kindergarten. Participants were free to play with available peers and materials. The leader guided and facilitated social participation, as well as prompting, modeling, encouraging and reinforcing the specific social skills discussed during circle time.
