Social Promotion In High School

Social promotion promotes students to pass to the next grade, but they haven't fully learned what was expected. It’s called “social” promotion because non-academic factors and considerations, including societal pressures and expectations, influence promotion decisions ( ). Parents will pass their child to the next grade without the student needing to know some of the things that was normal to others. There are some parents that retain their children because they feel its better for them. They don't really think about how it affects them if they pass them or retain them. Children don't feel the same as others, so there is a difference on how they are affected. Will social promotion be beneficial or detrimental to the parents and students?
Educators or parents may not want to damage a student's self- esteem or put him or her at greater risk of suffering from the social, emotional, behavioral, and psychological problems often associated with grade retention ( ). The student will not re-learn the entire grade again even though they didn’t learn much before. It may not be the student's fault for struggling because they can be slow learners, and if they are they should've had a little more help than others to meet their requirements. Social promotion can increase their learning and be more enhanced than it would be through retention. It is said that it decreases the chances of students actually dropping out and keeps them in school. Social promotion eliminates the need of high classroom numbers or additional teachers being on staff for extraordinarily high numbers for certain years, creating predictability and stability within the district budget (
