As stated in the article “Before a Test, A Poverty of Words”, one’s beliefs and culture greatly affect the lives of individuals. In the article, they state that Black and Hispanic students are hardly represented at all, and they have been doing poorly on the exams given out by the schools. “Expanding the ranks of poor Black and Hispanic children in the top high schools would seem to require infinitely more backtracking”. The United States has always been a country that people from all over the world have flocked to, to avoid the hardships and the tyrannies of their native lands. We pride ourselves on being the “land of the free”, and yet we cannot seem to give the simple right of marriage to the members of our gay community. The very first lines of the document of which our country was founded upon states that: “All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Is the right to marry whom you wish not a part of each of these rights listed? The homosexual community are discriminated against in the fact that they are not allowed to marry and have a long-lasting, positive relationship, just the same as their fellow heterosexual Americans. As this problem continues to be argue and discussed, more people are seeing that our homosexual population does in fact deserve the right to marry and take part in the federal benefits that go with marriage. Sadly, however, there are still people that do not find that idea to be a good one. Gay marriage should be legalized and recognized by the federal government for many reasons, but mostly because homosexuality is not something that someone chooses, and for the many benefits that married homosexual couples could bring.…

Except for the past 150 years our country has depended on renewable energy. Hopefully, one day we will be depending on that same energy. As geoscientist M. King Hubbert’s diagram reveals that constant growth from finite resources is impossible. There are three types of phenomena shown in Hubbert’s diagram that an industrial society must deal. One might think they know a lot about certain issues going on in the world, but in many cases, they do not know all of the details. If they did, they might think of these issues much differently. Before taking the Social Problems course I thought I knew what the most important problems going on in the United States were. The systemic view of the course has made me feel as though the problems we learned about are very serious, and capitalism in the U.S. is involved in many of them. I knew that the economy was a major issue and unemployment was a side effect of the collapse. I also knew that there were environmental problems that could lead to global warming. What I did not know was the all the details within all of these problems, and how they became problems in the first place. Some of the problems we discussed in class I did not even realize were problems in the first place. I did not know that our healthcare system was an issue, and I also did not know how involved we were in global inequality. In general, I feel as though this course has brought to light how serious certain social problems are, by explaining why they are happening and introducing topics that I did not realize were problems to begin with.…
