Social Networking—How is it transforming behavior?
Communication is an important part of the human lives when it comes to interacting and developing our society. Now, the communicating has taken to a new level by people, it is the social networking. Everyone has seen the rise of social networking in youth these days, for most of them, visiting these sites are part of their daily routine. The social media if is good for people has always been a controversial issue, everyone has a different point of view. From the current state of development, the social networking has positive affection to people.
Social networking site is one of the available means for people to connect to each other. With sites like Facebook and Twitter, people are connected. It has created a new simplified way to communicate with people from all around the world, and let them keep in touch with their friends and family. “Controlling for other factors we found that someone who uses Facebook several times per day averages 9% more close, core ties in their overall social network compared with other internet users.”(Hampton, Goulet, Rainie, Purcell) The social media also increase the speed of information sharing, people can get or put the information any times. “These networks can be used as effective vehicles for students to pursue self-paced online learning.”(Cosmato) People can get the news from the social media networking sites, it can let social networking spread information and news quickly.
Every coin has two sides. The social networking also has the dark side. Sometimes, it can cause negative influence to people, and some with long-term impact. The most common one is revealing privacy. Lots of people think their information is safe on the internet because of the high levels of security systems, but is not the truth. Almost anyone can see that the information you put online, they always can find the way if they want to. The criminal gangs stealing people’s information and use this to do illegal things to make money. “According to a 2010 Northeastern University and Max Planck Institute for Software Systems study, researchers created an algorithm to discover an individual's personal attributes by examining the one thing that most people leave public,even when all other privacy settings are place: their friend list.”(Frazier)
Although the social media has negative sides, it depends on all the users. The most common one is that people afraid to reveal their privacy. The social networking invites the big social media company to sell people’s information. Here are two reason results in this problem, one is the internet’s supervision is not strict enough and another one is people use in wrong ways. The social networking developing these days, people just have seen a rise in it. So the supervision system is not perfect now, it still need strengthen the supervision of the internet. Another reason is from the user, some people don’t pay attention to their privacy, they put their information in public, and it will reveal people’s privacy. It is a very popular video on the Internet these days. A group in Brussels, they random people were invited to have their mind read and they were told it was for an upcoming TV program starring Dave. During the program, Dave pretended that he can do telepathy. Then he told to these people their entire things, and the people got shocked. After that a white screen fell down, a TV behind the screen that showed their blog and all information.
The social networking has been developing recent years, it’s still a young online communities. It needs the supervision of government, and people also need take responsibility for their own safety and integrity. Like all kinds of social media or clubs that people used, it is a good way to work and study. People still need to have the self-supervise to know all the articles, the terms and rules, and also know the issues about personal security and privacy clearly.
