For many teenagers that is how they make friends. Through social media teens can meet and engage with other people around the world. Although this sounds like a great way to make and have friends it can often prove fatal. For example, I could be doing school one day and a friend might message me through texting. This can outright cause me to drop whatever I am doing and get engaged with something that distracts me from my studies.…

In other words, these students are finding it harder to socialize with other because they have gotten used to communicating through text. In the article “ Facebook Makes Us Sadder And Less Satisfied, Study Finds” by Elise Hu, John Jonides a neuroscientist, suspects, “ When you’re on a site like Facebook, you get lots of posts about what people are doing. That sets up social comparison — you maybe feel your life is not as full and rich as those people you see on Facebook.” Meaning that as the more people use social media they start to compare their life with others, which could affect them in a negative way like becoming less sociable because they have became…

Whether it be facebook, instagram, twitter , pinterest , tumblr , or snapchat . Social media is another phone. It is how we connect. In this day and age it is almost a part of life. Many people prefer to speak to a person over the internet as opposed to speaking over the phone or go and meet up with the same person. NBC news did a coverage on this issue. In their article they stated that “Many kids don’t understand the basics of simple conversation…with so much communication happening online or via text, kids have few opportunities to see manners and good communication in action, and even fewer chances to practice.” (McCready, Amy “Don’t Let Technology Rob Kids of Social Skills” pg 1). Social skills are pivotal to a person’s success in life. Without them it will be very arduous to build trusting relationships with others. If a person does not know how to approach unexpected situations in a work environment it will be very difficult for them to maintain a job . Another benefit of social skills is that if you know how to interact with others you can be happier. Great interpersonal skills could give you the confidence to discuss your ideas clearly with others. In addition to this if you can socialize with others you will be more comfortable going out to social events such as dinners , parties , ceremonies , carnivals , or even amusement…

Social media affects our kid's feelings of loneliness, separating them from the real world and increasing their feelings of depression. For instance, social media spread news of engagement and breakups, job gain and losses, passing test or failing, or news of life or death. It's easy for our kids to become overwhelmed with all the news. Social media also leads our kids to social isolation, especially, when the kids spent most oft the time on social media and reduce the chances of actual social communication. In addition, social media affects family cohesion. Social media makes our kids independent from the parent's involvement in their social lives. Our kids see social media as one way of gaining freedom from over- involvement and instruction from their parents. Kids prefer to stay in their rooms sitting behind a phone or a computer screen, chatting, texting, playing or meeting new people rather than sitting with the family. Like a mother was complaining to me about her teenage son the other day. He was very fond of painting, but recently, he lost interest in his hobby, he spent most of his time on social media. She noticed that sitting behind the screen affected his eyes and body, and he miss the opportunity to develop his personality and learn social skills. He stay up late chatting with friends or uploading pictures on Facebook, and he barely wakes up in the morning. This is one mother and I'm sure there is many…

Allowing minors to to use social media takes away their characteristic of being antisocial, as well as making them very knowledgeable about current events that are happening in the world they live in. It is shown in a study at Eastwood High School that two in three students who eat alone during lunch have absolutely no social media to interact with others. This shows that social media plays a key factor in the interaction of the making of new friends. Along with the making of new friends there is also the gaining of knowledge about certain events occurring in our world. As shown in a CNN study over the years, allowing children to watch the CNN student news gives them a lot of knowledge about the world which does not make them oblivious to these things like many other people are around the United States. This allows the students to realize that they should be thankful for…

However, the authors inform us that that is not the case. In fact, they state that most teens use social media for good and I believe that that is the most profound point of this chapter (p. 34). Even with cyberbullying being as prevalent as it is today, it is still not the norm, making the take home message from this chapter being that the benefits of social media outweigh the risks. These benefits include things such as giving teens a way to feel connected to their peers, a way to discover who they are as a person and what they believe in, as well as giving them a platform to express themselves that makes them feel as though they are being heard and taken seriously (2015). One quandary that teens experience is a desire to stand out and feel unique, while still desiring to fit in with their peers and feel like they are a part of the crowd; being a part of the smartphone society allows teens to do just that. While this chapter emphasizes how social media benefits teens, the authors surprisingly did not mention any specific instances of these positive experiences that teens have had. Throughout the chapter, they provide 8 different quotes from kids that have experienced the negative effects of social media; however, they did not supply any quotes for positive experiences. In a chapter that focuses on the benefits of a smartphone society, I…

Social media is a medium of communication shared by most adults and children, but most especially teenagers. It is sometimes helpful, entertaining and within the reach of the general public. It has become an important mass media around the world. Sadly, this resource is abused and taken advantage by most teenagers, and not used in a way that they could get the best benefits from. It can have negative effects on teenagers like addiction, psychological problems and cyber bullying which can decrease their self-esteem that can lead to depression and possibly self-harm.…

There are always two sides of every coin. Social media is just a tool or mean for people to use. It is still up to the users on how to use this tool (just like a knife, can help you to cut food or hurt others). Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project and Elon University's Imagining the Internet Center conducted a study on "The Future of Online Socializing" from the highly engaged, diverse set of respondents to an online, opt-in survey consisted of 895 technology stakeholders and critics. The negative effects presented by the respondents included time spent online robs time from important face-to-face relationships; the internet fosters mostly shallow relationships; the act of leveraging the internet to engage in social connection exposes private information; the internet allows people to silo themselves, limiting their exposure to new ideas; and the internet is being used to engender intolerance.…
