It is another perfect example of how our lack of sense and reason has transformed something that was designed to increase our social capabilities into a way to rant, boast, and bully. Instead of using social media to communicate and connect positively, our society has used it to create countless issues and distractions that only deter and detract from developing our social…

“When every thought is externalized, what becomes of insight? When we reflexively post each feeling, what becomes of reflection? When friends become fans, what happens to intimacy?” (348). Orenstein has a strong argument, when we share every moment for the world to glimpse at, it strips away your personal identity. People lose their own sense of humanity and how they treat others in real life. It is analogous to the saying where people become objects and objects become people. Everyone loves the wrong object and treats others in the wrong way. A study by the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan concluded that people have lost empathy, especially after the beginning of social media. Orenstein states, “Social media may not have instigated that trend, but by encouraging self-promotion over self-awareness, they may well be accelerating it” (348). The destruction of relationships will worsen as time goes on since people are slowly losing humanity traits, such as empathy, due to people being engrossed in social…

It is a portal in which sleep does not exist and that at any time, day or night, an on slaughter of bulling occurs. It is difficult to say that social media is positive when it allows such things as bulling to occur. Rose mentions reading positive articles about different experiences where Facebook and other websites have came in handy to bring forth positive changes. It is easy to say, that for every article that Rose reads about the favorable efforts these websites can bring, that he will also be able to discover articles that state that the same websites have lead to teenage suicide and body issues. Even the good cannot out weigh the bad. In 2011 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services conducted a Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey that stated 16.2% of kids had been bullied online…

Social media plays a huge role in our society. Social media is a rapidly growing industry, with approximately 56% of the world’s population using some type of social networking sites as of 2012. Social media is the means in which people interact amongst others through creating, sharing and exchanging information and ideas on virtual communities or networks. The fact that social media is all around us, it makes our everyday lives easier and more convenient. The downside of having too much social media in our daily lives is that it interferes with the social development of our society. Websites such as Facebook and Twitter allows its users to exchange thoughts and have online conversations with people they may have never met before. Our society uses such websites to have conversations with one another that maybe critical or rather personal; which leaves people being unable to have a real conversation face to face. These types of online interactions weaken our social skills and may in fact harm the intelligence of the future generation. Although, social media is a huge factor in our current society, it does not have to represent who we are as individuals. Therefore, social media hinders the development of social skills because it diminishes the authenticity of intimate conversations, it weakens basic verbal skills and it causes internet addiction.…

Social media is where people interact with others, share personal information and keep up with the latest trends and news. These days however, it is becoming the main form of communication for many. Recent technological innovations, such as social media networking sites has been said to alter the way in which we communicate and the interaction we obtain face-to-face. This topic basically comes down to who and how social media is used. The two works of literature by Sherry Turkle and danah boyd, show conflicting opinions about the subject. There is no question by either author about the impact of social media on how we communicate. Rather the main point of issue is social media making a positive or a negative impact. Sherry Turkle in the introduction of her book “Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other” argues that social media is making us hide behind the screen rather than actually communicating with one another. However, in danah boyd’s introduction of her book “It's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens,” she explains that even though teenagers are using social media more and more, its actually keeping them more connected. Although social media clearly has made an impact on how we communicate, it does not damage the way we make, sustain and understand relationships.…
