The Digital Age has bought about a change to the way we access and consume news. Before the accessibility of email, readers would pick up the newspaper and if there was anything on the readers mind, they would send a letter to the editor to voice an opinion. With the advent of the Internet and converging media, journalist must compete with the rise of the amateur reporter. The reader has gone from the news consumer; to the news producers. One such example was the Boston Marathon bombing. The average citizen provided most of what we at home were viewing as we watched the terror unfold. Information about victims had already started showing up on the social media sites. Video of the blast had been shared on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. In the past when a news story broke, the journalist would be the one to find background information and photos of those involved. Now that the spread of digital video, photo enable mobile phones, combined with blogs and viral distribution of the internet, this technology is making publishers take a second look at the way news is being reported. News organizations are no longer competing with just other news sources, but the readers themselves. Some news agencies have embraced this new digital age, such as CNN who has added the iReport to their website, giving some bloggers a place to upload videos and report a story as it…

As of January 2014, 74% of online adults were social media users. When social media began in the late 1970s with Bulletin Board System, a program designed to allow users to download files, games, and post messages to other users through telephone lines via a modem, not many were prepared for the effect it would have on the world 30 years later. As social media progressed through AOL (1990s), MySpace (2000s), and now onto Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, social media has continued to become a larger part of more and more people’s lives. A role that is now so large that many argue social media has become more of a curse than a blessing, and has poisoned communication, in person and over the Internet. But, social media helps protection services and law enforcement, assists people trying to stay up to date with the news, and allows people to stay connected with current and past friends.…

I frequently receive this disgusting impression every single time thoughts like this come across my mind, and what makes it more sickening is the lack of awareness and or moral support that is portrayed or should I say- actually done about the quandary my minority youth is unintentionally involved in. From fearing our lives to being looked at inadequately, some sense of corroboration has to be made in order for the racial profiling to be swamped away. Instead of being the type of man who speaks about an legitimate issue with no regards to fixing the issue, I myslef is different. About 10 months ago, in hopes to change the way general population look's at us young minority, Simply Great Clothing was created, and a 17 year old, black, high school…

Some debate that Facebook, and other social networking sites are undermining our ability to communicate and the use of such sites dehumanise what is an important part of community life and living together. However, if anything, I believe these social networking websites allow us the opportunity to meet and form friendships with people that we may not otherwise communicate with and to create these friendships faster. They allow us to keep in contact with friends and family, whether they are in our own city or on the other side of the world, with greater ease. In today’s fast paced environment nobody has time to sit down daily and respond to individual emails; Facebook and MySpace allow us to reach all of our friends and colleagues with a simple click of a button. For the introverts among us, social networking eliminates the pressure of face to face contact and can help those shy people with the initial contact of meeting others. Facebook’s photo sharing application is rated the most used on the Internet, drawing more than twice as much traffic as the next three sites combined. These statistics show a great emphasis on the online community, especially when 14 million photos are being uploaded every day. With active users doubling every six months and more than half of active users returning daily it is clear to see people all over the world are embracing the convenience of social networking.…

Over the past decade, the Internet has become an astonishing phenomenon within itself. Cheng (2006) indicated this widely-used resource boasts over 800 million accessible users throughout the world today. Why the unprecedented recent growth of the World Wide Web? Many users initially began getting online to retrieve information unknown to them and to keep track of recent news. However, additional advantages of active Internet use have recently been discovered, such as communication. The Web has become known as an interactive technological device used to correspond with others on a day-to-day basis. Through online dating sites, personal blogs, and educational forums, relying on the Internet to stay in contact with others has become a societal norm. Yet, according to the Pew Research Center, social networking sites are clearly the most extensively utilized links attributed to online interaction. Recent surveys revealed web pages such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter have actively engaged over 40 percent of the mature adult population and over 70 percent of the young adult population (Hampton, Goulet, Rainie & Purcell, 2011). It is obvious that computer mediated communication (CMC) is becoming a prominent method of developing and furthering relationships with others.…

Websites, such as Facebook, have grown so popular that they have been created into mobile apps for individuals to use when he or she is unable to access a computer. With the significant increase in the number of its users, social networking has become a universal activity with its positive effects outweighing its negative ones. And although their opponents may claim that they bring too many safety risks, which include the effects that cyber bullying may bring, these websites have brought many advancements and have changed themselves over time to create a better environment for their users. The positive effects that social networking has created can be found everywhere, whether it is by enabling companions to communicate after a separation or by creating memorable relationships.…
