Social Labels In The Outsiders

Living within a label, socs are perceived only do great things, while greasers carry the perception of only negativity. In ¨The Outsiders¨ children are either labeled as greasers or socs, greasers being at the bottom of the social scale. The film shows how social labels influence people to become something they are not. The film portrays this through the characters Ponyboy and Johnny, the two boys are labeled as greasers so they act as greasers, but that is not who they are. In the film, Johnny, who is a greaser, has a mental breakdown and says, ¨seems like there gotta be someplace without greasers or socs, must be someplace with just plain ordinary people¨ (Coppola).
