Social Influences In The Hunger Games

In The Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, and the other rebels must go against everything they have been forced to do their whole lives to take back Panem from President Snow (Larence,2012). Katniss, Peeta, Gale, all thirteen districts, and the Capitol are all affected by social influences in different ways. Social influence is made up of three main parts, conformity, compliance, and obedience (Kassin, Fein, Markus, 2014, pg. 255). Throughout the movie, all of the characters and their relationships are affected by at least one of these three aspects. In Panem, everyone is forced to follow President Snow’s orders, until Katniss played in the Hunger Games. Katniss is playing the games with a baker from her district, Peeta. Katniss and Peeta’s families are from the same district but live two entirely different lives. Even though they were not friends, their beliefs and feelings toward the capitol help build their relationship. Everyone knows entering the games and becoming part of the Capitol will make you a different person. Before the games start Katniss asks Peeta “How will they change you?” he tells her “I don't know. Katniss defying President Snow and standing up for herself causes some of the districts to wants to fight against Snow. After seeing how one person affected Snow, they saw a chance to take back Panem. Some people in these districts have been conforming so long they have now begun to agree with President Snow. The people disagreeing in these districts cause fights, and relationships to end. At the beginning of The Hunger Game Catching Fire, Katniss while touring the Districts, visits District 11, which was the home of Rue (Lawrence, 2013).
