Social Groups In A Bug's Life
Lesson 5 Short Answer
In A Bug’s Life in my perspective of social groups of primary, in-groups, and reference groups. I would have to say that the primary group would be the colony itself. In definition the primary group is a group characterized by intimate, long term, face-to-face association and cooperation. (Henslin, 2017) They all work together and all have an understanding to make sure they have food and take care of the colony as a whole and not just one. They play the role of a family. The next group would be the in-group. What is an “in-group” The in-group(s) groups that toward which feels loyalty. (Henslin, 2017) I would have to say that the in-groups would be the circus bugs toward Flic, they felt a sort of loyalty to him since he

(Henslin, 2017) Flik’s outer controls seem to be presented when he finds out that they are not warrior bugs but circus bugs. He is lying to the colony and to princess Atta. He then goes further to cover his lie and make everyone build a bird to cover his tracks so the other bugs don’t really have to fight. At the beginning of the movie Flik does show his outer side when he decided to step up to Hopper to let Dot go. But of course he did coward down. His most inner controls comes out in the end; even when he was beat down he got back up and said the truth. Even though it could mean that would die, He stood up to Hopper and explained that the ants do not need grasshoppers. Grasshoppers need them. Which took courage.
Lastly Differential Association Theory which can be explained to indicate that associating with some groups results in learning “excess of definitions” of deviance, and greater likelihood that one will become deviant. (Henslin, 2017) In the movie ‘The Bugs Life’, Flik is the character who tried to help his colony with his inventions and tried to influence them not to deviate. In every part of this movie, Flik was trying save and create a new path for his friends. In the beginning of the movie everyone neglected him, but at the ending everyone welcomed his ideas. They gave him encouragement in his

The interactionist Jock Young conducted a participant observation in London on marijuana usage by hippies. In the past hippie usage of marijuana was minor and relatively insignificant. Over time, the police started to see the hippies as dirty and scruffy, thus giving them a negative label. Due to this police reaction, the hippies united, feeling different from the rest of society. They then retreated into small closed groups, cut off from society and deviant norms and values developed. They were treated as outsiders and chose to accentuate and express their differences by becoming more and more unconventional. Thus, a deviant career developed. Interactionists would argue that because the police had labelled them so negatively they had caused more crime. Jock Young called this deviancy amplification. Before, the hippies had not been causing any trouble; they weren’t hurting or bothering anyone, until the police labelled them. Once they had been given this label, they couldn’t help but fulfil their master status.…

Differential Association was designed by Ewin Sutherland and his theory can mostly be demonstrated through interaction with others, individuals learn the values, attitudes, techniques, and motives for criminal behavior. Ewin Sutherland also states that individual conducts when regarding differential association, people learn the same in criminal behavior as they do in other types of actions as can be non-criminal attitudes as well. Differential association is a leaned behavior that develops over time and one’s surroundings. Environment surroundings have a major influence in your daily life and who is in it. To begin, a primary group is defined as a group which includes the characteristics of intimacy, long-term interaction, and face-to-face cooperation. A primary group in A Bug’s Life are the worker ants. The ants are a primary group because they work together very often, they are also made up of close friends or family. The ants have a close relationship and an understanding of each other. Next, an in-group is a group in which we feel loyal to. An example of this can be when Flik feels loyalty towards his colony. This is shown when Flik sets out to recruit help in order to protect his colony from the grasshoppers. Lastly, a reference group is when we refer to that group’s standards, and evaluate ourselves. I believe the reference group in this particular movie are the older ants of the colony and perhaps the co-worker ants. This is because I believe the ant colony holds a close relationship with each other. In the movie, those are the “people” in which the other ants look up too.…

Thank you for your post. I liked your answer to my question. I agree with you that if one were confident with themselves, they will not “follow” others and therefore the differential association theory would not explain deviant actions. It is funny that you brought up the speed limit question. I was driving home from work yesterday and everybody was speeding. I was thinking of how deviant they were! I had never thought of speeding as a deviant act until the activities inventory assignment last week.…
