This week’s reading was based upon the ideas of social stratification and how social class no matter what race you are can influence children think, behave and act. One article goes on to discuss how working class and poor children differentiate from children who are middle class. It first starts off with talking about how social class can determine the different types of parenting styles. This article discusses how working class families emphasize more on accomplishments of natural growth and little to no focus on developing children’s social talent. Another key point made in this article was the fact that working class and poor children are rarely involved in organized sports. This can influence how they are raised to think in act because in the study they did research where they spent time with kids from two different types of neighborhood one being low income and the other being children with an income of $175,000 plus. They observed how the kids acted in and outside of school and what they did during there down time. Most children who parents were focused on cultivation had activities planned for them that focused on enrichment and expanding their minds. while other kids spent a great deal of …show more content…
In it allows me to reflect on my life and analyze what time of parent my parents were and what type of parent I would like to be in the future and weight he good and bad of both options because the child who grew up in the cultivation homes grew up with a sense of entitlement while the child who grew up in the natural growth home had a sense of constraint. So this may be something I would want to consider when having my own children. This will also help me reflect upon myself to see which h characteristic I feel more closely related to and try to find a solution to that

    However, some do obtain success due to their upbringing. Child-rearing practices are different in each background. For example, parents from different social class backgrounds differ on how exceptional their kids will be in school. Gladwell discusses that the reason why poor kids do not excel in school is the time they prepare studying outside of school, which they put forth nothing. In addition to, kids from wealthier backgrounds are encouraged to read, express their emotions, and ask questions. Involved parents and parents who are not involved is the key difference that leads to an individual’s success. Upper class parents talk to their kids more and critically provide them a set of skills to endure. Gladwell asserts, “But social savvy is knowledge. It’s a set of skills that have to be learned. It has to come from somewhere, and the place where we seem to get these kinds of attitudes and skills is from our families” (102). An example from the book is Alex Williams and Katie Brindle. Williams came from a wealthy background and when school was not is session his parents were actively engaging him in activities. Because his parents believed in concerted cultivation, which is a style of parenting, that attempts to promote their children’s talents; by interesting them in activities. His parents took him to museums, enrolled him to special programs, and he attended summer camp. His parents encouraged him to read books when he was bored. This style of parenting allowed him to excel in his skills. Moving on to Katie Brindle, a poor upbringing for her. Her mother didn’t have the means to provide summer camp for her or provide her any special classes. When she was bored there were no books for her to read.     There are three main aspects to cultural deprivation, one of them being intellectual development. This refers to the child’s development of thinking and reasoning skills allowing them to solve problems and use ideas and concepts. Cultural deprivation theorists would argue that many working class homes lack the resources, such as books and educational toys, needed to stimulate a child’s intellectual development that would enable them to progress more quickly once the child has started school as they already have a prior knowledge and understanding. J.W.B Douglas (1964) says that working class parents are less likely to support their children’s intellectual development through reading with them or other educational activities in the home after he conducted a study that found working class pupils to score lower on tests of ability than middle class pupils. Basil Bernstein and Douglas Young came to a similar conclusion and suggested that middle class mothers are more likely to choose toys that encourage the thinking and reasoning skills that’d prepare their children for school. However, sociologists such as Bernstein and Young have not considered the fact that working class mothers may not have such choice in toys and books that’d be educationally beneficial for their children due to their financial state which would suggest that it is material deprivation that is more important here.…

    Concerted cultivation is a middle class child educational technique parent’s use on a child to improve their children’s talents. Middle class parents do this through scheduled activities. Concerted cultivated parents also practice the language of reasoning with their child. The parents believe that their children have the right to find an agreement with each parent.     In the article “From Social Class and The Hidden Curriculum of Work,” Jean Anyon talks about contrasting social-class school systems and the differing curriculum offered in each. The different social-class school systems consist of working-class, middle-class, affluent professional, and executive elite. As Anyon goes into detail about the interactions in the classroom between the teachers and the students, it seems that the higher the social-class, the better the education provided is.     The first factor that influences human development is a person’s socioeconomic status. This indicates a person’s position in society as determined by income, wealth, occupation, education, and place of residence. As a child, socioeconomic status has a big effect on the way a child is raised and the opportunities available to him/her.
