Soccer Balls: A Short Story
It’s an incredibly scorching afternoon on the soccer fields. The parched grass begs for even the most miniscule drop of water. Sweat streams down my face as my cleats claw their way forward at top speed. My lungs spasm with gasps, desperate to get enough oxygen. A soccer ball soars gracefully through the air and lands perfectly at my tired feet. It takes me a millisecond to realize what has happened but I quickly snap to attention as a teammate yells out. My legs move instinctively towards their destination—the net. A player dives in front of me but I effortlessly sidestep her and continue on my determined way. The net moves closer and closer at a seemingly astonishing rate. I take a few more steps and set my body into the perfect position to score. I wind up and smack the ball, content that I have done everything flawlessly thus far. My ears prepare to hear the cheers of teammates congratulating me for a job well done, however, that moment never came. The …show more content…
No longer did I want to be that person who deserved to be moved down to a deemed “loser” team. No longer did I want to be someone who failed academically, socially, and with family. Of course it took some time, but I gradually became someone who tried their very hardest in most aspects of their life. My confidence soared when I experienced spectacular things happening as I worked towards the things that I wanted. For example, I left the hardship I had experienced in middle school or my freshmen year of high school in the dust and gained my academic letter and beyond. The following sophomore year I made the varsity soccer team and made many new friends. Ashley doesn’t know it but her slap-in-the-face remark to me on that hot afternoon on top of the soccer field changed how I view my worth to the world. Everyday since that significant moment, I have been working to prove anyone who doesn’t believe I can achieve great things through hard work

I’ve evolved from an adolescent to an amazing young woman who can voice her opinions, make decisions, collaborates with others, and acts as a leader rather than a follower. In school, when asked to give a presentation or read out loud, I don’t cower in fear. I can stand tall and proud with a clear voice that portrays my knowledge. I can look at an upcoming event where I have to speak out loud and breeze through it with confidence. I look back at my ten year old self and smile. I can look back and think ‘that’s where I used to be,’ then look at myself now and say, “Look what I’ve become.” I don’t think I could be more proud of my progress. I still have a lot to learn, but I’m getting there. I’m excelling, and I’m ready for the rest of life. I’m ready to take on the challenges that the world throws at me because I have all the life skills that 4-H has taught me, “Learn by doing,” and “Make the best…

Since Jack stood up for me, I’ve regained my confidence. Nancy invites me over during the week and helps me learn to be more carefree and how to open up to others. Nancy was vehement while teaching me and was hoping I could start to fit in. Mr. Addams continues to tutor me after school and my grades have been gradually increasing. My classmates have also started to accept that I’m different and I’ll never be like them, but being different shouldn’t affect how I’m seen by everyone. I started to make small conversations with classmates rather than holding back my thoughts and others have seen my looks may be different than theirs but they could still be friends with me rather than judge my mistakes and the way I talk. I’ve had less stress since…

Eastview football is known for its outstanding sports programs, especially its football team. Unfortunately, that does not apply to my class. Our team had put in bone crushing hours in the weight room and on the field since June. There was no doubt in my mind that we wanted to win more than any other team. I wish this story ended with us getting countless wins and making it to state, however, Eastview football lost every single game that year. Even though we did not win a single game, I still refused to give up. I showed up to every single practice, eager to learn, and to make myself better. When I start something, I finish it no matter how hard or how painful it might be. I will bring that same intensity to UW-Eau Claire. There will be countless setbacks in my college career at UW-Eau Claire, but I am going to get through each and every one. My persistence and tenacity will make me thrive in your college, because I will not take the easy way around. I will take each and every painstaking step to see the view from the…

I had to deal with disappointment from teammates, coaches, parents, and, above all, myself. On the first day of tryouts my freshman year of highschool, I was kindly hypothesized to possess “potential”. I was horrified. Potential was the label given to those who stood on the brink of mediocrity; those who walked the terribly broad line of “nothing special.” I was painfully average. After being praised for my talents throughout the course of my entire soccer career, you can imagine my surprise and disappointment upon hearing the mortifying pronouncement of my amateurity. I didn’t know it at the time, but my coach did me a huge favor with his frankness. I realized that not everything in life would be handed to me on a silver platter. In fact, most of it would not. I had to prove myself worthy, not only to my coach, but to myself as well. Through my extra workout and practice sessions, I developed determination and a tireless work ethic that I apply to every facet of my life. I’ve learned how to take criticism and losses and transfigure them into improvements and…

Acquiring my natural optimistic inclination, these words were exhilarating; however, they became the words I soon detested. Lonely, bitter, hateful, and depressed, began to characterize my identity while I endured my transition. Furthermore, my entire life changed from being social, to becoming an outcast to my peers. Interests I used to have, such as reading, running, and philosophy, became absurd and futile. Negativity fueled my drive and motivation appeared nonexistentially throughout the course of my freshman year. Additionally, people from my town did not want to attempt to discern the type of person I was and how my identity became to be. Tammy Sanchez, the worthless “nobody”, became her label. The once buoyant, social, passionate, lady who saw life as her own fairytale, now conceived that life has no blissful ending. Having lost the basis of my being, I would stare into the mirror and constantly fail to recognize the person standing in front of…

I shout at the top of my lounges directing my defenders left and right to rapidly set up a wall and get in place to prevent the ball ending up in the back of the net. Finally the opposing team winds up to take the kick and strikes the ball with full force towards goal, and I take a step to the right and completely stretch out my body to deflect the ball away from the goal. However, as I stretch and tip the ball away from the goal; here comes an opposing player blistering towards my way and swings his right foot with full force and misses the ball but impacts with my nose. I lay flat face down on the turf hearing footsteps pound against the turf towards my direction and the referee blow his whistle indicating to stop the game. I fell the little pebbles from the turf from sticking one by one to my arms as I roll over on the turf, however I cannot not feel my face all I sense is my face tingling from my the bottom of my chin to the top of my forehead and warmth throughout my body. When I finally roll over I cannot see a thing, everything looks blurry as if I were wearing glasses effecting my vision. I rise to my feet and hear the referee…

I remember this morning clearly, the day I had been waiting for, When I received my SAT scores. I had never been a super bad student, just never really a good one, grades have never been important to me, it was always about friends. The spots for athlete and genius in my seemingly perfect family had already been filled by my younger brother and older sister, so I put my effort into doing the one thing I could do that no one else would- be popular. I’m not really trying to say that I’m the most popular girl in the world but I've always…

“You’ll never make it,” they all said, my boyfriend, family, teachers, and friends. It was like my life was already figured out for me, as if I didn’t have a say. The message was loud and clear. They all expected me to fail, to settle for a minimum wage paying job, to settle for just a high school diploma. For a while I went around believing that all I could do was the minimum required. But then I realized that I was capable of doing so much more. As time went on I realized that I did not have to live up to other’s low expectations and I started making a name for myself. I knew that studying a little harder for every test, joining clubs, volunteering, and running for leadership positions would later pay off.…

I walked on a thin layer of ice in high school; every time someone judged me, I could hear the ice slowly cracking under my feet. My life was in a fragile and brittle state during my junior year. I didn’t have the support of my parents, nor of my closest friends at this stage of my life. My own parents, teachers, and classmates had lost faith in me; to them it seemed as if I had ruined my life and that I would no longer succeed. On the contrary, I was determined to be successful because now I had someone special looking up at me as their role model.…
