SOCCER: A Great Way to Stay Healthy
In the modern society, people everywhere encounter health issues and problems. They say that prevention is better than cure and so, more and more people are trying to find ways to stay healthy and fit. People, young and old, try physical activities that are fun and exciting, too, and so they eventually turn to sports.
According to the Better Health Channel, soccer is great for fitness and cardiovascular health because of the continuous movement required in playing the game. People in various ages and skill levels can participate in soccer. It can also be a great sport for boys and girls who may not have high levels of athletic ability, but who would like to participate in team sports (Better Health Channel, 2014). The same article talks about the other benefits of playing soccer like it teaches coordination, promotes teamwork and sharing, and helps to increase skills in concentration, persistence and self-discipline. Playing soccer is also a great way to meet people and exercise with friends. Psychologically, an individual can increase self-confidence and use this sport as a way to reduce anxiety.
In the article written by Matthew Yeoman in 2012, he discussed how soccer benefits children’s physical health, social skills and worldview. For the physical benefits, players gain muscle tone and bone strength due to the constant movement of the sport. Soccer also has social benefits because the sport teaches teamwork, encourages communication skills and instills the ideals of equality. The author wrote in the article that soccer is simple to play but with the ability to teach complex skills that builds a child into an adult (Yeoman, 2012).
Professors Peter Krustrup and Jens Bangsbo conducted a 3-year study that examined the effects of soccer to men, women and children. The results were so remarkable because they were able to show more than the physical benefits from soccer. Their study proved that soccer provides a wide possibility of health and fitness effects. They added that soccer contains positive motivational and social factors that may contribute to the maintenance of a physically active lifestyle. Professor Bangsbo also added that soccer can be used to treat hypertension and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases (Krustrup and Bangsbo, 2010). According to Joshua Wortman, soccer training could be the best solution for middle-aged people who are suffering from hypertension. This sport will help them improve their fitness, normalize their blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke. This result was from an experiment which they conducted to 33 men who suffered from mild to moderate hypertension (Wortman, 2010).
Playing soccer increases lower leg muscle mass, improves jump height and power and develops better posture. Soccer creates strong bones which lowers the risk of fractures (Pashley, 2013).
For older people, playing soccer is still beneficial for them. This is proven in a study conducted on older men who have experienced mild to moderate high blood pressure. When they regularly played soccer, they were able to experience vast improvements in their health. The physical activity in soccer allowed them to really push their heart, lungs, muscles and other parts of their body which resulted to building endurance and strength. This activity also improved their blood pressure, cholesterol level and body fat percentage (Rivas, 2014).
On the other hand, young children also experience the very positive effects of soccer. Children learn to play according to rules and this is developed not only in sports, but in other social settings as well. Children learn better coordination through the many physical requirements of soccer. They also become more socially dependent and since soccer is popular worldwide, kids can relate to other children across boundaries. This will nurture in them an attitude that is more tolerant (Konnicke, 2009)....
