Snowball Research Paper
The first word that comes to mind when I think of a New Orleans snowball is “lagniappe.” Every time I go to New Orleans to visit my family, I have to get a cherry snowball, however the snowball would be nothing without lagniappe. The little something extra on top, in the form of condensed milk, is given for free. There are two sides of lagniappe, the person receiving and the person giving without expected reciprocity. Throughout my life I have been grateful to receive much to be thankful for, more than many other people. This is why I have a passion for returning my lagniappe to others through the volunteering I do. The main reason I choose to volunteer is because of the indescribable feeling that arises when you are able to help change someone else’s life. Firstly, I have been involved with Young Men’s Service League for all four years of high school, achieving the role of vice president of my chapter. The main goal is to not only serve the community, but also meet to discuss how to make changes in the world. The …show more content…
Their goal is to bring families closer together and inspire children to dream big. Listening to children’s aspirations remind me of my own. I tell them to never give up and have the “grit” of determination. Secondly, National Honors Society has played an integral role in helping me become a leader in the community. Recognizing students not only for their academics, but also their leadership abilities within the school. The ability to join together with students who love to help make changes in their communities is the reason why I am a part of this organization. Lastly, I have been involved with the Junior Volunteer program at Methodist Richardson Hospital. At the forefront of operations in the hospital, I am responsible for providing a helping hand and cheering smile, to brighten the patients and families’ days. Allowing me to fulfill my passion for helping improve other people’s

I came from a family of really athletic people. My Mom and sister Kaitlyn both played softball from a young age and had many great accomplishments. My sister Kassidy played soccer from a young age as well. I have a lot to live up to. I started playing soccer when I four and I played for one year until I was no longer interested in it anymore. I started softball when I was five, and it wasn’t my favorite. I then retreated back to soccer for a few years. When I was in second grade, I cut my ankle on the bowl that my dog broke when I was trying to get cereal because I was hungry. After that I really didn’t want to play soccer anymore, so I decided to retire my soccer cleats forever. After this, I tried various different ranging from swim team to softball, and as you can imagine, softball stuck. When it did though, it came with my hot-headed personality showing. There was no way around it. I was also very independent, which could be a good thing in some cases, but as I got older I was required to do more group work. I just didn’t know how to.…

From there, I hope to study to be accepted into medical school and specialize in pediatrics. When preparing for medical school, the advice one hears are to become a well-rounded student. Through my DECA experiences I have been able to develop leadership skills that will help me thrive in my future. Over the three years I have been involved, I have stepped out my comfort zone and made a difference in my local DECA chapter, community, and my future. Now taking the responsibility of being a DECA officer, as the chapter president, has allowed me to continue to grow and develop my leadership, communication, and social skills. Working with the Milan DECA Chapter members has proven how difficult and enjoyable being a leader is. At times leading so many events can be stressful; however, the completion of the events pushes me further. In order to reach the goal of becoming ‘well-rounded’, I used DECA skills to organize my time to join other extracurriculars within my community. Along with DECA, I participate in 4-H which is a non-profit organization in counties all across the nation that prepares youth to make a positive impact on their communities. Furthermore, I lead my 4-H club in a Relay For Life team through the American Cancer Society. Additionally, I am a dedicated musician, drum major, and the first Milan High School Flute Choir Director. I am an active participant in the peer education program at Milan High School. I am so thankful for the opportunities to be a leader within my class, school, community, county, and…

As a youth group member, I was lucky enough to get the chance to go to New Orleans in the summer of 2011. During my stay, I was able to help others in a way that changed my life. When I was helping serve food, picking up trash, and helping to restore a church, I looked at children and families who were receiving that help. Their faces were priceless. It was like they won the lottery. Helping young and old, children, and families who were less fortunate than me, made me realize that I want to help people in some way when I grow up. That’s what made me want to pursue a career in health education after I graduate.…
