Snow Street Creative Writing
Snow landing softly on the ground in Paris, France, the whole city was in a resting slumber except for one curious, adventurous girl named Alma. Awakened by her sense of adventure right after sunrise, Alma hastily dressed into her warm, cotton light pink jacket, pair a murky green pants and tan mittens with a royal blue, wool cap. Escaping the comforts of her own home, Alma and went skipping around the dark, cavernous city by herself. While skipping under the main bridge, Alma comes across a long, narrow road called Snow Street. The narrow road had dozens of open shops, but they all seemed to be out of order or abandoned years ago. The only modern object on the dead street was a green chalkboard hanging on the wall with dozens of other names on it.
Written in clean cursive, Alma wrote her name with chalk,

Amazed, Alma saw the doll that looked exactly like her on the showcase in the middle of the quiet room. Alma was about to grab the string haired doll to keep as a souvenir of her own, but was interrupted by a small plastic boy doll riding a tricycle to the quickly closing door, trying to give some sort of message. The boy on the tricycle kept crashing and crashing into the eroding door, but Alma just simply ignored the helpless doll and did not understand the message trying to be sent to her. When Alma looked up, to her own admiration, the doll magically moved onto a high shelf where Alma was not perplexed by the spooky movement of the doll. Reaching only on the raggedy old doll, Alma did not realize that two twin dolls dressed in black dresses were nodding their eyes in a right to left formation trying saying “no.” Unfortunately, Alma touched the soft bundle of yarn and soon became the sad, hopeless doll that everyone one else was. Alma’s eyes were the only moveable parts of her doll body and became the victim of the doll maker along with many other naïve, young

Several days later, Moses’s prayers payed off, Annabelle fully recovered from her trauma and the whole family were really relieved of the news. A week later, a visitor named John Hale came to the Hembling home to question Annabelle, knowing she was sworn to secrecy, he claimed that all the girls danced and that was all. Moses quickly caught on and knew she was lying, in spite of that he kept his mouth shut. As soon as John Hale left, Moses wanted to talk to his sister about what happened in the woods, all that Annabelle said to him was that “the girls were doing what they thought could bring them happiness but in reality they are only giving themselves to the devil”. To Annabelle, what Tituba was doing seemed like witch craft. Moses and his father then laid the whole thing to…

He was alive. Steve remembered when that was his mantra during that first suicide mission to recover the 107th. Bucky was alive. As Steve lay in the hospital bed recovering from his injuries, that thought bounces around in his mind. Why hadn’t he looked for him? How could he have let his body rot in that ravine without at least looking for him? Why hadn’t he done something? He had been so sure that he would know when Bucky died, that he would feel it, yet all these years he had been alive and Steve hadn’t known. It didn’t matter that he had been under ice for a good portion, it should have never gotten to that point. How could he have left Bucky in that ravine?…

So I sat back and thought about it strictly from a reader’s point of view. Perhaps the mother simply wanted her daughter’s doll to be preserved. Maybe she wanted her daughter to be able to cherish the doll through her adult life as well and thus, had to carefully monitor her daughter’s playtime with her gift. Frustrating, but possible.…

Rosario Ferré uses dolls in her writing to symbolize the methods in which society holds down women in Puerto Rico as well as throughout the world. In "The Youngest Doll," Ferré sets the precedent that dolls are equal to the maiden aunt's nieces, by stating, "The aunt had continued to increase the size of the dolls so that the height and other measurements conformed to those of each of the girls (Ferré 483)." The methods in which the aunt prepares the doll, such as, "Then she would make a wax mask of the child's face, covering it with plaster on both sides, like a living face wrapped in two dead ones (483)," re-entrench the concept that it is not only men but women who view the female in a diminished sense. This is further developed when the aunt states, "She would reassure the grooms by explaining to them that the doll was merely a sentimental ornament, of the kind that people used to place on the lid of grand pianos in the old days (484)." This contradiction, while subliminal, demonstrates the primary objective of Ferré, that women are viewed as objects that have no pragmatic value; essentially on earth as a toy.…

After admiring what she had added to the wall she began to continue walking, just at that moment something caught her eye. It was a doll in the shop window of what appeared to be an old toy shop which had once thrived but was now deprived of a decent upkeep. On taking a closer look Alma noticed the doll had a coat just like hers. Looking down at her coat and back up again she noticed something else. Its facial features were almost identical to those of Alma’s. Intrigued, she shuffled towards the door attempting to push it open but it was locked, out of sheer distress due to the fact that the door wouldn’t open Alma kicked it and carried on walking. The door eerily creaked open. Alma smiled, turned around and entered the shop. Upon entrance the first thing Alma noticed was the array of Dolls all lined up along the shelves. Why would they be in a shop that isn’t used anymore? Alma then noticed the doll which interested her had moved. It was now perched on a table in the centre of…

Everything was silent at first, as are most moment’s right before a major storm. People were roaming around, minding their own business and going about their days like nothing was wrong. It was quite clear most were trying to rush to get everything accomplished before the downpour, but no one knew how soon it would happen. Suddenly, as young eyes searched around the area for a treat for being a good boy during the trip, the wind suddenly picked up. Papers and leaves blew about, some flying in front of his face. This caused him to let go of the hand he was holding onto so he could rub at his eyes. He heard a voice, but the wind was too loud for him to hear over.…
