Who Gives a Snap? 158 million people use the phone application Snapchat daily and among them moms are taking over (Carson). This may be a teenager’s worst nightmare, especially if their mom is one of those taking a step into becoming a “cool” mom. Snapchat mom users can be divided into many groups, three of them being Troubleshooting Mom, Selfie Bomb Mom, and Vlog Mom. A Troubleshooting Mom is a mom who has no idea what she is doing, but she is still trying her hardest to be a cool mom. For example, they instead of replying to a Snapchat directly they may post in it on their story. According to Elise Moreau from Lifewire, “A Snapchat story is a photo or video you post to your very own stories section (or feed) of your account, which is visible by you and all your friends,” (Moreau). This means instead of sending it to one particular user she is sharing her private conversation with all of her friends on Snapchat. Another common mistakes from Troubleshooting Moms may be screenshotting every snapchat she receives. This totally defeats the purpose of Snapchat, which was to send pictures, which would disappear in a matter of seconds. Bottom line, Troubleshooting Moms do not know what they are doing and probably should not be using Snapchat.
For example, this type of mom will spam their Snapchat friends with at least one picture using each filter. These face filters were first introduced to Snapchat in September of 2015, and ever since Snapchat has been improving them (Wojdylo). Currently, Snapchat has 23 of these fun filters, giving plenty of opportunities for moms to turn into a Selfie Bomb Mom.
