Snap-Judgment In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet
How can Romeo and Juliet, a classic Shakespeare tragedy about two star-crossed lovers, even remotely have ties to Blink, a modern non-fiction book? Blink is about delving into how we make our snap-judgements; our decisions without thinking. Romeo and Juliet’s theme is we can make rash decisions with little information—life changing decisions. Romeo and Juliet’s story was made up of a series of snap-judgements. Even how they fell in love only knowing each other for minutes is one big snap-judgement. Romeo, just after meeting Juliet for the first time, says: “Did my heart love til now? Forswear it, sight!/For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night” (I,v,51-52). Romeo is known to be dramatic and a hopeless romantic, loved another before Juliet

    Romeo first encounters Rosaline at the masquerade ball, he cannot help feeling mesmerized by Juliet. Romeo’s fascination of her leaves him sitting by her window, feeling mesmerized by Juliet’s eyes which are “Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven...To twinkle in their spheres till they return” who leave him in a state of enchantment (2.2.15). At first site Romeo and Romeo distinguishes that Juliet remains as his one true love. Romeo judges Juliet by her physical appearance instead of her personality. Additionally, Romeo experiences such great elation in being in love with Juliet that he will do anything to prove it, including the act of marriage. To demonstrate Romeo’s love for Juliet will not pass, Romeo seeks Friar Lawrence and “pray[s]: That thou consent marry [them] today” (2.3.60). Just like that, it takes two days for Romeo to come across his darling and decide on marriage. The bliss Romeo senses for Juliet stands sturdier than any pain felt formerly. All in all, the physical attractiveness of Juliet and marriage, a proof of his love, shows that young love can take place in a matter of days in the form of happiness.…

    When Nurse tells Juliet who Romeo is, Juliet says, "My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me that I must love a loathèd enemy" (61). When Romeo sees Juliet on the balcony later that night, or possibly the next morning, he says, "It is my lady. O, it is my love" (69). In real life, two mature people don't know for sure that they've fallen in love after talking for just a few minutes. Their immaturity is shown in these quotes because they think they are in love before they have spent any time together. Perhaps Romeo thinks he loves Juliet because she is the first girl he has approached who seems to like him back. Maybe he just likes her because of her beauty. Either way, if he were mature, he would not think he felt love for her so soon after first laying his eyes upon her. Juliet could think she loves Romeo because she is so used to being kept in her house and has not been exposed to many young men. This most likely causes her to think, since he could be the first boy who has directly flirted with her, that she loves him.
