1960s, tobacco’s harmful effects was not known and was being used in everywhere even for some treatments and experiments. But after some studies and researchs, in 1964, in Surgeon General’s statement, smoking’s harmful effects was understood. Smoking causes serious health and economical issues with it’s effects such as causing huge financial losses in country budgets, leading to many kinds of health problems and affecting either smokers and non-smokers. First of all, causing health problems is the most dangerous effect of smoking when be thought surfacely. Smoking causes many health problems but the most important and fatal one is lung-cancer.
Lung cancer is responsible for one over three of all deaths caused by smoking and the other ones are heart trouble, chronic lung and respiratory diseases, other types of cancer such as bladder, pancreas and kidney cancer. Lung-cancer is one of the most deadly disease in today’s world. Nearly 90% of people who had suffered from lung-cancer could not have survived. Afflictive part is, victims of lung- cancer are intensifying as the years passed by. In 1950, 18,313 people suffered from and died because of the lung-cancer. This year, it is expected nearly 111,000. Dr. C. Everett Koop, who was Surgeon
General between 21 January 1982 and 1 October 1989, stated that: “If it were not for lung-cancer deaths, the overall cancer mortality would have fallen, reflecting improved diagnosis, treatment and survival times for other forms of the disease.”(Mar. 08,1982). Smoking also causes addiction after several usage. Cigarettes contains over 4000 poisonous materials, and nicotine, which leads to addiction, ,s one of them. Addiction is actually the main reason why humankind suffers from smoking that much. Without frequently usage, smoking does not affect human body too much and does not cause serious health issues. Secondly, causing financial problems is one of the most harmful, and when be thought generally, is the most important effect of smoking. People, who are addicted to smoking, needs to smoke all the time and can buy cigarette from anywhere. This leads to huge amount of usage of tobacco products and that cause enormous financial losses. Also smoking-related health care causes incredible financial issues. Every year, millions of people goes to hospitals to be recovered from diseases which are caused by smoking and pay lots of money to the hospitals. Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop stated that: “This can only presage human tragedy in the years ahead and enormous economic loss to our country.”(Mar.08,1982). He also underlined that, in the U.S., more than 25 billion dollars spent for tobacco production and at least 13 billion dollars for the health care which is related to smoking. Thirdly, smoking does not affect only smokers, it also affects non-smokers with it’s smoke which carry poisonous materials. It is known that there are over 4000 poisonous materials in a cigarette. Over
2000 of that materials are carried with cigarette’s smoke and spreads to everywhere. That poisonous smoke affects non-smokers too. That means, non-smokers can be caught any disease that can caught, with only be exposed to cigarette smoke. Smoking is also like contagious disease. Addiction of smoking can be spread between friens with elaborating on smoking and in the family if there is a smoker in the family. Even non-smoker who has exposed to cigarette smoke too much can turn into a smoker. Studies shows that children who has at least one smoker in the family is twice likely to start smoking. In conclusion, leading to financial issues, causing many kinds of diseases and affecting non- smokers are the main reasons which causes discussions about smoking. Today, everyone knows simply what are the harms of smoking and there are a lot of people who tries to quit smoking, but still millions of people who suffers from smoking and can not get rid of that disease which could possibly kill them.

On Columbus’ second voyage, a monk named Ramon Pane described how Native Americans used tobacco. At this point tobacco was not used recreationally, but as a medicine, or hallucinogen during religious ceremonies. The Europeans began using tobacco as a medicine until around 1560 when it began to be used recreationally. In 1561 the Queen of France (Catherine de Medici) declared it be called Herba Regina, which means the Queens Herb. Tobacco was introduced to England in the 1580s, and by the early 1600’s had spread all across Europe. In 1642 tobacco was officially legal tender. Debts, marriage licenses, and fines were paid in paid with tobacco. Tobacco was even used as collateral for a portion of Americas loans from France during the Revolutionary War in 1776. In World War I, people really began to use tobacco recreationally, and it was known as the “soldiers smoke.” Researchers eventually started discovering the negative effects of tobacco use starting in the 1950s. To date, tobacco is known as the number one leading cause of preventable death. Use of tobacco is still increasing in underdeveloped countries, raising 50% in China from 1992-1996. Researchers estimate that one in every ten adult deaths is because of using tobacco, and estimate that in the next twenty years, it will be every one in six. I would say that tobacco was good for being used as legal tender, but that once it began being used for recreational use, it would have been better if it was never…

The negative effect smoking has on a body is almost common knowledge in England. But people continue to start and keep smoking. There must be some benefits. Smoking relieves stress (Lantry, 2009). This is because cigarettes create the conditions that help the body deal with anxiety, stress and depression. Smoking relaxes breathing (Lantry, 2009). Smoking is a kind of breathing that slows the heart rate and relieves tension in the muscles, especially the neck and upper back, which tense up in stressful situations (Lantry, 2009). Some people smoke to control their weight. Smokers, on the average, weigh seven pounds less than non-smokers; smoking reduces a person’s appetite and also smoking lessens his/her sense of taste and smell (Lantry, 2009). Sometimes smoking is a way to avoid feeling unpleasant emotions such as sadness and grief; it can hide apprehension, fears and pain (Fourman, 2010). This is accomplished partly through the chemical effect of nicotine on the brain (Domino, 2008).…
