The process of strategy can be seen in different ways. To evaluating the suitability of approaches to strategic management, it is indispensable to explain the meaning of strategic management, which Nag, Hambrick and Chen (2007) states as 'major intended and emergent initiatives taken by general managers on behalf of owners, involving utilization of resources, to enhance the performance of firms in their external environments '. Taking this definition as a starting point, there are intended course of action and emergent course of action which both can achieve the organisation’s purpose.
The suitability of the emergent and intended approaches to strategic management for Tesco will be evaluated in this essay and is mainly divided into four parts. Firstly, emergent strategy formulation for Tesco includes the merits and limitations will be analysed by using differing environmental contexts. Secondly, how intended strategy be formulated for the environmental contexts Tesco faced is described. Thirdly, the suitability of the emergent and intended approaches to strategic management for Tesco will be evaluated. Finally, a conclusion of evaluation for both views will be given at the end of this essay.
Mintzberg and Waters (1985) stated that Intended and emergent approaches are complementary.

David (2012) states as ‘The art and science of formulating, implementing, and evaluating cross-functional decisions that enable an organization to achieve its objectives’ which used synonymously with the term strategic planning.
