Introduction: The broader context of this lab was aimed at observing animals and documenting specific animal behavior patterns. Specifically, we were trying to determine if squirrels applied snakeskin randomly to certain areas of their body or if there was a specific technique to it in relation to escaping their predators. After an animal has determined that a predator is nearby, it must then take action to avoid encountering this threat. Encounters are most easily avoided by preventing predators from detecting prey in the first instance (Rosier & Langklide, 2011), for squirrels this type of behavior is known as SSA, “snake scent application”. In this lab we wanted to study two different species of squirrels, S. beecheyi and S. variegatus, in order to evaluate if SSA can be deemed as a species specific type of behavior. My hypothesis was that squirrels applied the snake skin scent to specific parts of their body in an organized manner. The null hypothesis is that squirrels apply the snake skin scent randomly to parts of their body. My prediction of my hypothesis was that squirrels apply the snake skin scent to body parts that they find prove to be advantageous when trying to escape their predators.…

    Why Do Humans Kill Sloths

    • 271 Words

Sloths have many predators, like an jaguars and humans, there are many more but we are just going to talk about these. Jaguars are the top predator on the ground. Sloths go down to the forest floor once a week, and when they go they can't protect themselves from jaguars. Humans shoot sloths so they can cut down their homes. When they shoot them they stay hanging in the tree because their claws have such a great grip, and the hunters have to climb the tree just to get the sloth. But in my opinion that is too much work just to kill a harmless creature, because they are eventually going to become extinct if humans keep killing sloths. Humans kill sloths so we can use sloths claws for knives. Some people capture sloths as pets and they aren't used…

When trees are in fruit, usually during the monsoon season, sloth bears dine on mango, fig, ebony and other fruits, and also on flowers. Termites, dug out of their cement-hard nest mounds, and some ants, are year-round staples. During non-fruiting season, insects constitute 95 percent of their diet. Sloth bears climb trees and knock down honeycombs, later collecting the honey from the forest floor. Beetles, grubs, and other insects round out their diet. During food shortages, sloth bears will eat carrion. They also sometimes raid farm crops.…
