Slim of Mice and Men
Of Mice and Men is an all time best selling novel that was set in the 1930’s. The 1930’s is generally always related to the Great Depression; this was a time of hardships and massive responsibilities.
Since times were rough characters looked for a role model who could give them guidance. On the ranch where all the characters worked and lived was Slim, the most respected one on the ranch. The responsibilities the characters had or did not have will create a better understanding of the overall feel of the book and the respect the characters give to Slim will show his importance to the plot. Of Mice and Men is story of two young men, Lennie and George, who are quite different in character but manage to travel together working towards one goal. Their dream is to have a place of their own and to live “off the fatta the lan.” Along the banks of the Salinas River in California is a nearby ranch where the young men go to work and try to earn enough money to achieve the American Dream. George is quick witted man who looks after Lennie who is mildly retarded and, George tries to keep Lennie out of trouble as much as he can. Lennie is not a mean person and never intentionally try to hurt anyone but, in the end he ends up hurting a few and getting into trouble. The most trouble giving to Lennie is from Curley and Curley’s wife. Lennie accidentally kills Curley’s wife and has to run away to Lennie and George’s hiding spot but, to save Lennie from any suffering and out of love George kills Lennie before Curley gets the chance.
Probably the best description of Slim's effect on people would be his "god-like eyes". Obviously if he is being compared to a deity, he has a marked impression on the people he meets. The men look up to him and see him on an elevated plain, like a god.
Slim is tall, ageless, and an expert in his job.
A tall man stood in the doorway. He held a crushed stetson hat under his arm while he combed his long, black, damp hair straight back.

My choice of Leonardo Di Caprio as Slim is derived from the idea that he would best portray a majestic “prince” of the ranch. His demeanor suitably fits the character of Slim and would be quite different from the other actors and actress.…

Slim has such an authority on the ranch that his word was golden. If Slim said that something was to be done, everyone on the ranch went along with it and no one rebelled against it. This is not because the other characters on the ranch are scared of him by rather the fact that he is portrayed to the Readers as the being very respected. Slim is the voice for justice within the novel. This shows that he is wise and all the other ranch workers looked up to him as a role model since he is like a father figure to all the ranch men with his words of wisdom being the words they live by. Steinbeck describes his manner as having “gravity” and “a quiet so profound that his word was taken on any subject.” Slim was not someone who had to raise his voice to be authoritative. His presence spoke for itself. Slim serves as an annoyance to the character of Curley, since he really should be the “prince of the ranch” as the boss’s son. The use of this metaphor implies that Slim has a higher social status than the other ranch workers. Additionally it is important to understand that he has t assigned himself with the label as curly no doubt would…

Slim is described always in terms of dignity and majesty. When he first comes into the bunkhouse, he moves "with a majesty achieved only by royalty and master craftsmen. He was a jerk-line skinner, the prince of the ranch, capable of driving ten, sixteen, even twenty mules with a single line to the leaders." Slim is tall, ageless, and an expert in his job. His voice is the voice of rationalism. When Carlson suggests killing Candy's dog, Candy appeals to Slim as the final authority.…

The atmosphere in the setting of the book “Of Mice and Men” is complex, thus being multiple sides to it. There are factors of the ranch that make it a good place to be in, but there are also factors that don't. Certain people create a certain ambient, such as a happy one or a sad one. Slim creates a welcoming ambient and a pleasant one, with his cheerfulness and willingness to make new friends. “Are you the new ones, can't wait to have you in my team, I got a pair of bunks in my team that don't know a barley ba from a blue bag.” We can observe he is a nice guy that is happy and gets along very well with other people.
