slim
In the novel 'Of Mice and Men' written by John Steinbeck, we are first introduced to Slim, when George and Lennie arrive at the ranch; he is first mentioned when they are both told to "Go out with Slim's team", which suggests that Slim is probably the leader of the a team, which suggests the fact that he is a good , motivated and hard worker .

john Steinbeck presents Slim by making everyone his favourite by saying things like
"hope you get on my team", which suggests that he is a kind person. Slim was different from the others, by the fact that he does not seem to want something outside of what he has, he is not beaten by a dream, and he has not laid out schemes. Slim seems to have somehow reached the sad conclusion that dreams seem to lead to despair. He doesn't have any dreams because he notices the fact that dreams don't come true. They are only fantasies in the mind that depress you, if it isn't turned into reality.
John Steinbeck presents slim by the fearless, decision maker when conflicts arises among workers and wins the confidence of George offering advice, comfort and quiet words of wisdom for instance “Ain't many guys travel around together," he mused. "I don't know why. Maybe everybody in the whole damn world is scared of each other.” This suggests being together is so great, you'd think that more guys would team up, however you always die if you go alone. But they don't. Is it more dangerous to be together? In this world, it just might be.
Through Slim Steinbeck also uses him to show the problems in society at that time. Slim is the ideal friend and brings the best out of people. Also some people, when compared to Slim's God-like individuality, appear to be more spiteful and wicked .john steinbek presents Slim by reminding the reader of Lennie's strength but his incapability of controlling in.
The main attitude towards Slim throughout the novel from the rest of the men at the ranch is of respect. He is authoritative in any subject,

“You’re all scared of each other that’s what.” This quote is one of the main points of John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice And Men, the effect of isolation on human beings, and specifically the culture of our nations that forces people to be isolated. Steinbeck almost immediately sets the course of the book with his setting, the 1930’s depression was an awful time for the world, money was low, work was scarce and throughout all of the major nations there were many people who would have to go hungry and unemployed. America was specifically hit hard by this depression and many workers had to move in-between jobs and travel across country through numerous different states to find work. These workers were known as itinerant labourers and generally travelled alone. This is why it is strange for Lenny and George to be travelling together to find work and makes them stand out from the rest of the workers who “…get their bunk for a month, and then they quit and go out alone.”…

As the men constantly travel alone, they all feel the need to confide and therefore love the idea of having a friend, companion or even just someone to talk to; as in the novel George explains: ‘I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone. That ain’t no good. They don’t have no fun. After a long time they get mean.’ This suggests that the ranch workers are all lonely, as they need somebody to be with, otherwise they change and ‘get mean’. Their need for a friend is reinforced as Whit shows his desperation to prove he has a friend when showing Slim his entry into a magazine, and his enjoyment in doing this. ‘Whit closed the magazine impressively’ As there is so little other than work in there lives, and because they have no permanent home the men seem to cling on to any social aspects of life, and in this case Whit is so proud of his friendship…

This makes me insinuate that he is clever to choose his battles to ensure that he will win. Moreover this in itself tells me that Curley isn’t as tough as he makes out and makes me think that he uses his fights as an excuse to emphasise his masculinity just to exert this fear among his peers and be seen as this dominant alpha male. But he himself is just insecure and really he wants to be like slim; this is evident from his encounter with slim later in the story when he is…

Of Mice and Men is a popular short novel that was written in 1937 by the author John Steinbeck. The novella is about the story of two farmhands, George Milton and Lennie Small, who have dreams of one day owning their own farm. The motion-picture adaptation of Of Mice and Men, released in 1992, is very similar in most aspects; however, the endings of the book and movie differ from each other in a significant way. The ending of the novel Of Mice and Men includes a scene where George, after killing Lennie, is comforted by Slim, a kind man at George’s ranch; be that as it may, the motion picture does not include this scene, and this obscures the intention of the original work because the movie’s exclusion of the scene where Slim offers his friendship…

Slim is described always in terms of dignity and majesty. When he first comes into the bunkhouse, he moves "with a majesty achieved only by royalty and master craftsmen. He was a jerk-line skinner, the prince of the ranch, capable of driving ten, sixteen, even twenty mules with a single line to the leaders." Slim is tall, ageless, and an expert in his job. His voice is the voice of rationalism. When Carlson suggests killing Candy's dog, Candy appeals to Slim as the final authority.…

Throughout Of Mice and Men the ranch workers do stereotypical things and things that go against what others stereotype them as. Before getting to know Slim, he seems like a stereotypical ranch worker, but he does many things that go against the ranch worker stereotype. George quickly trusts Slim because of his calm and trustworthy demeanor, and after telling Slim about why they had to leave Weed (Steinbeck). “Slim neither [encourages] nor [discourages]” (Steinbeck) George to talk, and after George tells him, Slim does not judge George and Lennie. “Slim had not moved. His calm eyes followed Lennie out the door. "Jesus," he said. "He's jes' like a kid, ain't he." "Sure, he's jes like a kid. There ain't no more harm in him than a kid neither, except he's so strong" (Steinbeck 43). Here, Slim and George come to the conclusion in this quote that Lennie is too kind for his own good. Clearly, their last expectation for him would be for him to murder. Also, his immense amount of strength gives him more power than he is capable of handling. Lennie is too strong for his own good, even though he should be able to handle himself at this point in his life. His disabilities account for the fact that he can’t handle his strength, as well as his dependency on…
