Sleep In High School
A high school student is one of the most hard working and sleep deprived individuals in the education system, especially a student that aims for success. As a student advances in high school, their schedule becomes jam packed with homework, social activities, and managing puberty, so where does sleep fit in? It seems that sleep becomes the insignificant factor in the already busy and hard to manage schedule, but students are not to blame. Instead, the early morning start of many high schools, which can be altered, is to blame. Sleep is nearly impossible to fit into the schedule of a student because it seems the high school regimen does not regard sleep as a necessity to success. Emily Richmond, the public editor for The Atlantic, reports more than 40 of the 50 states begin the school day earlier than 8:30 a.m., which in turn prevents many sleep deprived students with busy schedules from having the chance to obtain the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep needed per …show more content…
Of course, homework and puberty are unavoidable, and socializing is a necessity to human life, but as each becomes more time consuming along with an early start to school, sleep can only find a spot in the schedule during the late hours of the night. Eventually, after sleep deprivation becomes a chronic pattern, damage to a healthful student is soon to follow. Developing such a chronic pattern threatens the physical health, emotional stability, and academic performance of a student. No student should not have to face such difficulties in order to receive a high school education, so in order to combat this growing problem, the causes and effects of sleep deprivation on high school students must be recognized, consideration should be given to changing the high school schedule to better suit the needs of students, and the process of change must be put

    On average in today’s society most teens don’t like going to school that early in the morning. To have to wake up so early when they only get about seven hours of sleep, to have students be coming into school at 7:30AM or maybe even earlier in some other schools, is not right. Students need to have time at night to get work done, not only schoolwork but also non-schoolwork. Needless to say, the school schedule for high school students needs to be changed and be made where they go in later. That way they get their work done and get enough sleep because without much sleep students will not be getting high grades. A health survey that the University Health Center administered showed them that one in four students say that lack of sleep has affected their academic performance in a bad way (“Sleep Rocks”). Sleep deprivation impairs students’ ability to be alert, pay attention, solve problems, cope with stress, and retain information. Academic performances on students are low due to lack of sleep. Schools should start later so students would get more sleep at home and it would prevent them from sleeping in class, so the students would have more motivation and students’ academic grades would increase.     Humans are naturally programmed to have to rely on sleep for energy throughout the day. However, as school times become earlier and earlier, it is evident that students turn to other sources of energy such as caffeine and energy drink to keep them awake throughout the day.     Two common causes of adolescent sleep deprivation are: early school start times and part-time jobs. Early school start times have been a topic of debate for years. By staggering the times that the different grade schools are in session the districts are able to cut down on costs, but studies have shown that this is done possibly at the risk of the student’s health. School start times limit the amount of time that is available to a student for sleep, and are normally set without consideration for sleep schedules (Carskadon, p. 492). By starting school early in the mornings, students are not always able to get the needed amount of sleep in order to avoid deprivation. Part-time jobs also hinder a teen’s ability to sleep enough. One study showed that, in the 1980’s, thirty percent of the students surveyed held jobs that required them to work 20 hours or more in a school week (Carskadon, p. 491).
