Slavery Was The Main Cause Of The Civil War
There are many causes that led to the separation of the North and the South, but the one idea at the root of it all was slavery. Slavery was the practice that ultimately divided the North and the South without the hopes of any peaceful reconciliation. The United States of America was split in two, and both sides thought they were right. It was hard for a compromise to be reached because both sides were no longer working under a common goal. Slavery was the main reason the free Northern states and the slave Southern states divided, but it was the other issues that were caused by the issue of slavery that pushed the United States into the Civil War. They were separated and had different ideas about the way this conflict should be resolved. Slavery

    Prior to 1860 the America was already split into two sides, the north and south. To prevent too much conflict, they implemented numerous compromises such as the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850. Although these did ease tensions to some degree, they only temporarily delayed the problems. It started when Abraham Lincoln was elected as president. South Carolina was the leader of the southern states and was the first to secede in 1860 of the states. After Lincoln was inaugurated in 1860 seven states ceded from the Union and soon after four more joined them. The south believed that they had the constitutional right to secede (Doc A). South Carolina feared that the north would gain enough power over the south that they would abolish slavery in the south. South Carolina felt that their powers were being overpowered so they had no choice but to secede from the Union. This of course was the start of a very bloody war for both the northern and southern states. This struggle led to the Emancipation Proclamation and the freeing of the slaves in the confederacy.     THE PEOPLE IN THE SOUTH’S OPINION ON THE WAR . The question to ask one’s self is how a country suddenly can be divided into two parts? What triggered the people to create a separate nation? That is exactly what happened in the mid1800s in the United States. Most people in the south were rich people who settled there to create competition with other towns. When they realized that the soil there was good, they decided to start farming. The early settlers were rich people who did not want to work on the lands themselves so they employed people who they later claimed as slaves. The southern states wealth was largely dependent on saves.
