In the article “A Blight on the Nation: Slavery in Today's America” by Ron Soodalter, the contents outline that the common concept of slavery not existing is, in fact, fictitious. Soodalter highlights, that to most Americans’ common knowledge, that centuries ago the South had slaves, and the North fought a war for the liberation of all slaves. At the end of the Civil War, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freed all the slaves in the South, and then later the 13th amendment fully abolished slavery and enforced servitude throughout the United States. However, as we kept our blind eyes turned, slavery has been allowed to blossom out of control, regardless of its illegality around the world. Soodalter states, “With an estimated 27 million people…
After the Civil War ended, the abolition of slavery created a controversy in the economic motivation of the South over work force and the penal system. However, during the 1800's a new found free labor force known as convict leasing became most popular. Convict leasing allowed wealthy families who bid the highest to lease the convict and use their labor in exchange for food and clothing. The lessee could force the convict do whatever he pleased. Even though the convicts were paying the price of their crime, they were treated very inadequately and did not deserve such harsh punishment in some circumstances. As long as the South accepted that convicts deserved to maintain this level of work just as slaves did, they would never be able to fully…

When looking at the time period from January 1st, 1787 to december 31st, 1862, there are many important dates and events that occurred. One of the biggest issues that has been around for decades is slavery. We can look at the statement made by a historian “The main issues people fought over in the United States from 1/1/177 to 12/31/1862 was slavery” to evaluate if slavery really was the main issue, or if there were other issues that were being fought over in the United States at this time. In my opinion, slavery was the main issue that brought on many wars, laws or acts and other disputed between people in the United States. But on the other hand there have been other issues such as weak government.…
In the Southern Colonies, slaves were widely used as a source of cheap labor for plantation owners that wanted cheap labor. Slaves were subjected to harsh conditions, working long work days in extreme heat in horrible working conditions. They were used to grow and harvest tobacco, sugar, and rice on plantations. Slaves were widely used in the South, in contrast to the North, who had slaves, but not nearly as many. Slaves were used in the South because there was an economic need, it was cheaper for plantation owners, and a geographic need, they were needed for the owners to keep their farm functioning.…

The women worked as housemaids, cooks, babysitters, and doctors. The slaves were living in dilapidated huts and hoses. Every Time the slaves disobeyed, they faced extreme torture. Instead of reducing as stipulated by the constitution, Slavery spread to other western territories and states as new cotton fields were planted, and by 1830 it thrived in more than half the continent. Within 10 years after the cotton gin was put into use, the value of the total United States crop leaped from $150,000 to more than $8 million. This success of this plantation crop made it much more difficult for slaves to purchase their freedom or obtain it through the good will of their masters. Cotton became the foundation for the developing textile industry in New England, spurring the industrial revolution which transformed America in the 19th century. The cotton boom and the resulting demand for slaves brought increased danger for northern…

In America's modern society, we have developed selfish humans that have deducted years from other humans. Majority of individuals don’t realize that slavery is currently continuous in our time of day. Even when slavery was abolished in 1865, it has unfortunately not been concluded to an end. The relevance of slavery in the modern United States is still sincere and yet hasn’t vanished. Many people will think about slavery in the 1800’s when one perceives the phrase “Slavery in the United States”.…
