Slaughterhouse 5
Period: 5
Chapter 3

“Three inoffensive bangs came from far away. They came from German rifles. The twoscouts who had ditched Billy and Weary had just been shot. They had been lying inambush for Germans. They had been discovered and shot from behind. Now they weredying in the snow, feeling nothing, turning the snow to the color of raspberry sherbet. Soit goes. So Roland Weary was the last of the Three Musketeers.” Page 54
I chose this passage because to me the author makes it really impact full to anyone who wants war or wants to fight in a war because you don’t even consider when your going into a war with your friends that you might be the only one of your best friends you were so close too that makes it out.
This passage made me think of how the character Weary who hates to be ditched by his friends was in away left alone again because they ditched him and then that was his last memory of them.
This passage related to the overall message of the book because it shows how war can leave you with a lot less then you went in with and how its not worth it at all.
The passage is a significant eye opener because it gets the reader thinking in a way that they might never have before.

“Billy had a framed prayer on his office wall which expressed his method for keeping going, even though he was unenthusiastic about living. A lot of patients who saw the prayer on Billy’s wall told him that it helped them to keep going, too. It went like this: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom always to tell the difference.” Among the things Billy Pilgrim could not change were the past, the present, and the future.” Page 60
I chose this passage because it explains how hard it is for Billy to live his life, because he is trying to live a regular human life on earth when he knows so much more. He has been shown the fourth dimension in time and thinks that everybody else is unable to break away from

One way the authors argue against war is that war tears families apart. “Go, Sam. Go. Get out of my sight. I can’t bear to look at you anymore in that vile costume. Get out.” (Collier and Collier 22). That is one example of how war tore the Meeker family apart. The Quote shows Sam getting kicked out of his home because he decided to fight in the war because he was influenced by others at Yale. “I’m too old for him to tell me what to do anymore,’Sam said” (Collier and Collier 33). That is another example of how war tears families apart because, sam no longer has any respect for his father and will no…

In the beginning of the fourth chapter, Billy comes in contact with the Tralfamadore aliens for the first time. Unstuck in time, Billy knew beforehand that he was going to be kidnapped by the Tralfamadorian flying saucer. Once he was aboard the ship, Billy asked “Why me?” and the alien compares Billy situation to a bug trapped in amber. “ ‘That is a very Earthling thing to ask, Mr. Pilgrim. Why you? Why us for that matter? Why anything? Because this moment simple is. Have you ever seen a bug…

At time when Billy Pilgrim becomes un-stuck, he is taken to the mysterious planet of Tramalfalmador and is taught the ideology of the Tramalfadorians. The Tramalfadorians live in the fourth dimension, so when Billy is visiting their planet, he can only carry on a conversation with them, but he is incapable of seeing them. When he is first brought to the planet, their intentions are to see him mate with another human, female, from his planet Earth. He learns many things from the Tramalfadorians, such as only paying attention to good, quality things in life. So when Billy becomes unstuck in time on several occasions and is taken to his death, he does not let it despair him. He simply recognizes that his death is a part of his life, not necessarily a tragedy, just another moment in time. When Billy shares these experiences with his family, they seem to think that maybe it is due to the trauma from the war and that he is losing it, for lack of a better word.…

The unforeseen problems that agribusiness has brought to the host cities range from the increase in crime, health problems, communication problems, increase in migration (documented, undocumented, refugees) that leads to prejudice and culture clashes, inhumane working environments, increase in housing cost while working for minimum wage, environmental problems, and much more. In the book, Slaughterhouse Blues: The Meat and Poultry Industry in North America, David D. Stull and Michael J. Broadway point out that the current state of the meat and poultry industry is unstable and inhumane. If large meat and poultry corporations like Tyson and others want to decrease these unwanted problems that come with the food industry, Stull and Broadway…

Slaughterhouse Five, by Kurt Vonnegut, is a novel in which the laws of physics are broken -- apparently. Billy Pilgrim, the main character, is loose in time and is free, though not in control, to experience any moment of his life, including the moments before he was born and after he dies (experienced as hues with sustained sounds). At random times in the main sequence of his life he literally jumps to other times, something which he is fully aware of. He can be on Tralfamadore one moment, back on earth with his wife the next. This could be puzzling to the cursory reader, but Vonnegut makes sure to spell out his reasons why such events can be believed as realistic and perceived as happening, to some extent, to everyone everywhere -- at all times.…

For example, on page 134 it states, “Oh the effects of it were real the rising prices, the shortages of everything, the news that so-and-so had been killed in some far away battle.” Because of this, everyone is affected. Most farmers need to buy some of their supplies, so the rising prices make it harder for them to make a living. Many people will lose their jobs and starve. On page 190, it says “I didn’t see how they could find Sam guilty, he’d fought for three years, he’d risked his life, how could they decide to punish him for something he hadn’t done? It just didn’t make sense.” This shows that many people die unfairly. The generals don’t care for their soldiers as much as they should. They don’t give any soldiers the justice they deserve. This is unfair to many families because their sons die without glory. In Sam Meeker’s case, he died without justice. He joined the army for the glory of it and never got any. As a result of many people run out of business and some of their family end up in the grave. The Meeker’s experienced things no family should ever endure. This ranges from wrongful death to almost losing their business. Life Meeker once said, “In war the dead pay the debts for the living.” This stays true as Life had to give up his life so that his wife and son could enjoy all their moments on…

“Little souls who thirst for fight, these men were born to drill and die” (Crane 7-8). Stephen Crane’s poem acknowledges the fact that many soldiers in the war have fought for survival, dehumanized, and lost lives for their country. Many propose the idea that war is not necessary and that it is pointless. This is quite ironic since a great amount of people go to war even though they think that it is unnecessary. Generally, these battles can be prevented after all most people would say that war is a tragic thing and that it shouldn’t play such a big role in life. Author of an international bestselling novel All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque also portrays a similar purpose in his novel as Stephen Crane’s poem “War is Kind”. Remarque and Crane both want to convey a message of harmony by distinctly delineating the destructiveness, dehumanization, and the ridiculousness of war.…
