MY SKYDIVING RISK

Through your life you come across a number of risks. Each risk you are faced with comes with certain choices and circumstances. Some risks are greater than others and it's up to you to decide weather or not the risk is worth taking. One particular risk that stands out most in my mind is the time when I went skydiving with all my friends. This event has greatly changed the way I view life.
Ever since I first got introduced to skydiving I have had a fascination with the sky and would always dream of the day when I could go skydiving myself. One night my friends and I were hanging out and watching a movie. In the movie we saw a bunch of people skydiving and my friend Mike as a joke said that we should go too. At that moment no one was really serious about it but I knew in my mind that I wanted it. I started to get my friends into it by basically beating it into their heads. That night we looked up all the information we needed and decided to go two weeks later, on a Saturday.

At that point we found a reputable place in New Jersey were we scheduled our skydiving adventure. This consisted of a three hour lesson, a training video, and a one on one personal lesson with a licensed instructor. Waiting for the day that we were going to jump was the longest two weeks of my life. Through those upcoming days we would talk about the day when were going to jump, the anticipation was building and now the risks seemed to be greater then I expected. I soon realized that I should stop worrying and just relax, because I knew that there was no turning back. I couldn't back down and tell my friends that I am not going. My friends just wouldn't except that answer from me, so I knew I had no

Taking risks is one of the most important things to do in life. There are small risks that can be taken like, should I talk to a stranger? Or should I go to the movies by myself? In the poem “Risks” written by Janet Rand, describes certain risks that some people may be afraid of. From the book, “Banner in the Sky” chapter two, “A Boy and a Man” written by James Ulman, shares a similar theme about taking risks. In the story, a boy stumbles upon a man trapped in a crevasse. The boy took the risk and saved the man. The poem and the chapter share the similar theme about taking risks. Taking risks is so vital in life that if you don’t take any, then you can never grow as a human being.…

An important basketball player once said, “Never say never because limits, like fears, often are an illusion.” Michael Jordan was saying that you can run from those illusions or you can challenge them. When I was in 6th grade, an important person told me that I should join Sunfish Swimming. I wasn’t really sure what to make of that and laughed it off. A week later, I was told that there would be a swim meet and that I should go and see if it would be something I was interested in. So I agreed, just to see what it would be like. We drove to Fargo and watched the swim meet. When I came back I was not sure if I would be able to handle it and be under that kind of pressure. But they talked me into it, and I said yes to swimming a few days…

Skydiving can be an exhilarating sport whether it is deadly or done correctly. Skydiving is the sport of jumping from an aircraft and performing acrobatic maneuvers in the air under free fall before landing on the ground with a parachute. As the skydiver falls, he or she encounters the force of air resistance. The amount of air resistance is dependent on two variables, speed and cross-sectional area. The speed of the skydiver accelerates downwards and gains speed with each second. The increase in speed is accompanied by an increase in air resistance. This force of air resistance counters the force of gravity. Once the force of air resistance is as large as the force of gravity, a balance of forces is reached and the skydiver no longer accelerates and then reaches terminal velocity. The cross-sectional area of the skydiver in the spread eagle position encounters more air resistance than a skydiver who assumes the pencil-dive position. The greater cross-sectional area of a skydiver in the spread eagle position leads to a greater air resistance and a tendency to reach a slower terminal velocity. Once the skydiver leaves the aircraft, or plane, they leave a projectile motion and could leave the plane at maximum speeds ranging from 53 meters per second (m/s) to 76m/s. This range of speed is a skydiver reaching terminal velocity. Terminal velocity occurs during free fall when a falling body experiences zero acceleration. It is a constant speed that a freely falling object, in this case skydiver, eventually reaches when the force of the resistance of the medium, as air, is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the force of gravity. A falling body eventually experiences zero acceleration because of the force known as air resistance. Air resistance exists because air molecules collide into a falling body creating an upward force in which opposites gravity. This upward force will eventually balance the falling body's weight and will continue to fall at constant…

Once I felt as though I could do it, I let my heart rate settle a little bit and then walked towards the daunting ledge. I looked over the ledge at the water below and had to take one step back and regroup. I was trying to drown out the members of my family who were saying things like “you can do it!”,“You’re almost there” and, “I believe in you”, but after hearing those things I realized it was much needed, it gave me a boost of confidence. I walked back to the ledge, turned my back to the open water, and faced the gigantic rock I would be attempting to climb down. I gripped my hands tightly on the cold rock and moved one foot down the side until I found a small ledge I could rest my foot on. The only thing that was going through my mind was the possibility of the rope holding my weight, preventing me from falling, could break and I would fall and hit the hard rocks below me. Hot tears were streaming down my bright red face, I was looking up at my family through my vision blurred with tears of…

I enjoy the excitement of participation in a skydiving operation that consists in small numbers of personnel to a mass group.…

I met an elderly man and his wife; they were very polite and friendly. It was their first time parasailing also. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, it was time for us to board the boat. We had to walk across the street and down a long walkway to get to the dock. As we were boarding the boat I almost slipped and fell into the water.…

Of course my wedding and the births and arrivals of my children are the most memorable moment in my life. But the most memorable moment that threatened my life was the terrible aircraft crash occurred to me 11 years ago, only a few flashback memories are what is left in my head. It was windy condition at Labuan Island in October 2000. My friend and I was planned to fly 2 aircraft that was Hawk 108/208 to Sandakan and Sipadan Island for Navigation sortie. We took off from Labuan Air Base around 1200 noon, I flown on second aircraft as a wingman and my friend as a first aircraft as known as a leader of our formation. I was enjoying my flight from took off until returned to Labuan Air Base. Our mission as a simulated mission was to destroy the enemy camp at Sipadan Island. After our mission was accomplished successfully, we have flown back to Labuan Air Base without any problem. My leader was safely landed without any problem and he wanting for me to land the aircraft at intersection. During approach to land, I felt uncomfortable due to surface wind at airfield area was a bit high and gusting. My leader was transmitted to me through the radio to inform that the wind was gusting and be cautious for landing. I managed to land the aircraft on the runway however during rolling to stop the aircraft, my aircraft was blown by the wind and course the aircraft skidded and uncontrollable. With that condition, my aircraft was out from the runway and pointed toward the monsoon drain. Aircraft was bloom up about 20 feet above the ground and at that moment I decided to go out from the aircraft together with my ejection seat. I was ejected from the aircraft and tumbling for a few second before the chute was blossomed and made me landed safely about 30 feet from my aircraft without any major injury. After that I managed to walked toward my aircraft and saw the condition of my beloved aircraft, then I thought for a few second, what will be happen…

As we continued our drive, I noticed that the creek was looking nice that day, probably because of the blazing weather. We approached a crowd, and I was already pumped to finally escape the heat. But as we approached the place we were going to swim, Henry said to me “I hope you’re not afraid of heights”. At this point I thought he was kidding but then I saw the rock, and I thought differently. The rock is an understatement. It was probably about 20 feet high and I told Henry there was no way in hell I was jumping off of it. I knew there was no possible way he could convince me to make the leap. Unbelievably he did though,…

After trying out safe stunts on my bike, I decided to move it up a notch. One day dressed in my helmet ankle elbow pads and protective gears when we were fooling around I cranked up my bike held down the clutch, gave it the gas in full and then did what no sane rider would, suddenly let go of the clutch. The bike jumped through the air and voila! I rode it on the back wheel for about 5 meters I know it is not much, but here I was doing something I had only seen on TV. However, of my three friends only two dared try it. We did this for some time, and it was invigorating every time we did it. We would also take the bikes to the free way and race not for the sake of winning, but performing many stunts at top speeds. The feeling of the wind blowing past you, the breathtaking speed, the turns and occasional “flying” moments would send a rush flowing through my bloodstreams. The fear combined with the temporality high gave me an indescribable feeling of elation. The fact that there were often people watching and the risk from automobile traffic made it even more fun. We, however, had to quit for a while after Cris one of my friends ended up crashing his bike and ended up with two broken ribs, and 12 stitches on the left leg…
