Due to the cancer originating from the lower layer of the epidermis, the amount of sun exposure is a major factor in getting it. Since we are constantly exposed to the sun in daily life, about 75-80% of skin cancers are basal cell carcinomas. As a matter of fact, it’s so common that one in every five Americans will develop this cancer in their lifetime. The cancer in the basal layer grows very slowly so it is rare that the cancer spreads far to other parts of the body. But if left untreated for a long period of time it can grow into nearby areas and invade the areas beneath the skin such as bone.
